The analyst sent:

I’m filing a complaint.

The CEO smiled.

Good.

The ability to joke about reporting systems was not proof they worked.

But it was better than employees being terrified of them.

Five years after the scandal, the CEO visited the Chicago office again.

No disguise.

No undercover role.

No sunglasses.

The eighth floor looked different.

Some furniture changed.

More importantly, leadership changed.

The former young analyst now headed the regional operations strategy group after several promotions.

The facilities technician supervised an internal team of seventeen.

The receptionist became an office manager.

A new department director had been hired from outside.

On the CEO’s first morning back, coffee spilled near the conference room.

She saw it.

So did the new director.

For half a second, memory flashed.

The CEO waited.

The new director walked to the supply closet.

Grabbed paper towels.

The receptionist said:

“I can call facilities.”

The director shook her head.

“I spilled it.”

He crouched and wiped the floor himself.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody photographed it.

Nobody turned it into a leadership lesson.

That was why the CEO liked it.

Normal respect should be boring.

Later, the facilities supervisor passed her in the hallway.

He nodded toward the clean floor.

“Missed your chance.”

She laughed.

“To what?”

“Mop.”

She looked at him.

“I’m retired.”

“From cleaning?”

“From dramatic corporate symbolism.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

Then his expression became serious.

“Can I tell you something?”
