The Dutch billionaire had spent forty years building an empire, but it took him less than forty seconds to destroy the most important business opportunity of his life.

And the woman who ruined his plans was standing beside his chair, holding a black leather menu folder.

At least, that was what he believed.

“Wat een dom meisje. Ze begrijpt waarschijnlijk geen woord van wat ik zeg.”

What a stupid girl. She probably doesn't understand a word I'm saying.

His laughter echoed beneath the enormous white lantern hanging above the private dining table.

Three wealthy American businessmen smiled politely. One chuckled. Another lifted his wineglass. The oldest lowered his eyes toward the carefully arranged silverware, visibly uncomfortable with a joke he didn't fully understand.

The young Black waitress didn't move.

She was twenty-seven years old, strikingly beautiful, with flawless deep chocolate-brown skin, expressive almond-shaped eyes, soft full lips, and elegant features that made several guests turn their heads when she entered a room. Her black hair was arranged in a neat bun beneath a traditional white Dutch lace bonnet.

She wore a crisp white blouse with puffed sleeves, a closely fitted black lace-up bodice, a long blue-and-white patterned skirt, and an immaculate white apron. The outfit was inspired by traditional clothing from Volendam, adapted for the restaurant's annual celebration of Dutch heritage.

Her appearance was graceful and composed.

Her expression gave nothing away.

But she understood every word.

In fact, she understood Dutch so well that she recognized the billionaire's accent immediately. He had grown up near Rotterdam, had spent years living in Amsterdam, and occasionally used regional expressions that sounded slightly old-fashioned to younger speakers.

She knew because she'd spent much of her childhood listening to similar voices inside this very restaurant.

She had studied Dutch for seventeen years.

She'd traveled to the Netherlands, negotiated supply agreements with Dutch companies, and once delivered a business presentation entirely in the language.

The billionaire knew none of that.

He looked at her dark skin, her traditional waitress uniform, and the modest position she appeared to occupy beside his chair.

Then he decided she couldn't possibly understand him.

That assumption made him careless.

“Tell me, young lady,” he said in English, “do you know what proper service looks like?”

The waitress met his eyes.

“Yes, sir.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Then why have you been standing beside my chair for nearly thirty seconds without refilling my wine?”

She glanced toward his glass.

It was still more than half full.

Their service standards called for discreet refilling when appropriate, not interrupting a guest simply because the liquid had fallen slightly below the rim.
