The billionaire stared at her.

For the first time, the issue seemed impossible to avoid.

He could explain away the documents as errors.

He could blame the developer.

He could authorize another legal review.

But he couldn't deny the words he'd spoken.

The waitress had understood them.

The Americans had witnessed his behavior.

And he had personally threatened to destroy her career before learning she controlled the business.

He looked toward the folded white apron.

For a moment, he almost apologized.

Then pride intervened.

“You deliberately concealed your identity.”

The young woman shook her head.

“I wore our Founders' Week uniform and helped serve dinner.”

“You allowed me to believe you were an employee.”

“I am an employee of the company, as well as its owner.”

The billionaire frowned.

She continued.

“I never claimed I lacked authority. You assumed it.”

He looked away.

The room became silent.

Then the younger American businessman, who had laughed repeatedly during the insults, cleared his throat.

“Perhaps we should take a break.”

The young owner looked toward him.

She had not forgotten his laughter.

Nor had she forgotten the way he stopped laughing the moment her identity became clear.

She considered saying something.

Then decided the point had already been made.

“We can conclude the meeting for tonight.”

The billionaire looked up.

“Conclude?”

“Yes.”

“We haven't completed the negotiation.”

She stood.

“That's correct.”

The billionaire rose.

“Are you walking away from forty-eight million dollars?”

She looked at him.

“I'm declining the agreement you've presented.”

His expression darkened.

“You won't receive a better offer.”

She considered that.

“Then I'll have to continue running my restaurant.”

The older adviser looked down to conceal a smile.

The billionaire stared.

He was accustomed to people treating his money as the answer to every difficulty.

Now a woman barely half his age had simply refused it.

And worse, she seemed perfectly comfortable doing so.

The young owner extended her hand.

“Thank you for coming.”

The billionaire hesitated.

Then shook it.

His grip was firm.

So was hers.

For a moment, they looked directly at one another.

Then she spoke quietly in Dutch.

“Geld geeft u keuzes. Geen recht op minachting.”

Money gives you choices. Not the right to treat people with contempt.

The billionaire slowly released her hand.

He said nothing.

The Americans collected their documents.

The dinner ended.

And the billionaire walked out of Het Blauwe Huis without the restaurant he'd come to purchase.

The young owner didn't celebrate after the guests left.

She returned to the staff preparation room, removed her bonnet, and sat quietly on a wooden bench.
