The billionaire stared.

“Someone copied a signature from one agreement onto another?”

The developer's face reddened.

“That's your interpretation.”

The billionaire looked toward his attorney.

Then back at the developer.

“Did the restaurant owner authorize the document?”

The developer didn't answer.

The billionaire waited.

Finally, the man said, “Not directly, as far as I know.”

The room went quiet.

The billionaire leaned back.

“Then it should never have been represented as her acknowledgment.”

The developer spread his hands.

“We were trying to keep the project moving.”

The billionaire's expression hardened.

“At whose expense?”

The developer stared.

“What?”

“You were trying to keep the project moving at whose expense?”

The developer looked irritated.

“Every major development requires difficult decisions.”

The billionaire nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

He closed the folder.

“But those decisions must still be based on accurate information and lawful authority.”

The developer laughed bitterly.

“Now you're going to lecture me about ethics?”

The billionaire looked toward him.

For a brief moment, he remembered the restaurant.

The waitress.

The insults.

The way he'd treated someone as insignificant because of her uniform.

He knew he had no reason to feel morally superior.

He had made his own mistakes.

But he also knew that recognizing one failure did not require accepting another.

He answered quietly.

“I'm going to insist that my company not proceed on documents we cannot trust.”

The developer stood.

“This project will collapse.”

The billionaire remained seated.

“Then we'll reconsider the project.”

“You'll lose millions.”

“Possibly.”

The developer stared at him.

Then said, “That girl has gotten inside your head.”

The billionaire looked up sharply.

The developer continued.

“She's a waitress playing businesswoman. She inherited a restaurant and thinks she's smarter than everybody.”

For several seconds, the billionaire said nothing.

Then he spoke in Dutch.

“Je hebt niets geleerd.”

You've learned nothing.

The developer frowned.

“What?”

The billionaire repeated himself in English.

“You haven't learned anything.”

He rose.

“The woman you're insulting identified problems your entire team failed to address.”

The developer stared.

The billionaire continued.

“She understood the documents. She understood the property. And she understood the risks.”

His voice remained controlled.

“If we had listened earlier, we might not be sitting here.”

The developer opened his mouth.

The billionaire lifted one hand.

“This meeting is over.”

The development relationship was subsequently suspended, then terminated under the applicable contractual provisions, subject to resolving outstanding obligations.

The proposed hotel project entered a lengthy period of redesign and financial review.

And for the first time in years, the billionaire began questioning not only the people around him, but also the leadership habits that had made those people afraid to deliver bad news.
