"Then can we please let this go?"
For the first time, Mara felt something inside her marriage shift.
Not dramatically.
There was no shouting.
No slammed door.
Just the realization that Daniel considered the argument over because he no longer wanted to discuss it.
Mara had not been heard.
She had simply been asked to become quiet.
The pattern continued as Sophie grew.
Evelyn organized birthday parties without asking Mara about the guest list.
She purchased expensive clothes the child found uncomfortable.
She criticized the neighborhood preschool Mara preferred because it lacked social prestige.
When Sophie turned four, Evelyn announced that she had arranged a place at an exclusive private academy.
Mara was stunned.
"We haven't applied anywhere."
Evelyn smiled.
"Connections make these things easier."
Daniel looked pleased.
"That's generous, Mom."
Mara turned toward him.
"We haven't discussed it."
He hesitated.
Evelyn's smile vanished.
"Are you saying the school isn't good enough?"
"Of course not."
"Then what's the problem?"
Mara looked toward Sophie, who was playing nearby.
"The problem is that decisions about our daughter belong to her parents."
Evelyn straightened.
"Daniel is her parent."
Mara stared.
"So am I."
For several seconds, the room was silent.
Then Evelyn spoke with quiet contempt.
"You seem determined to turn every kindness into an insult."
Mara looked toward Daniel.
He was staring at the floor.
"Daniel."
He raised his eyes.
She waited.
He hesitated.
Then said, "Maybe we should just visit the school before deciding."
It sounded reasonable.
But the real issue had not been addressed.
Evelyn had once again acted as though Mara was not entitled to make decisions about her own child.
And Daniel had once again found a compromise that avoided confronting his mother.
That night, Mara waited until Sophie was asleep.
Then she entered Daniel's study.
He sat behind his desk reviewing financial reports.
"Can we talk?"
He looked up.
"Of course."
She closed the door.
For several seconds, she searched for the right words.
Then she sat opposite him.
"Do you respect me?"
Daniel stared.
"What?"
"Do you respect me as your wife?"
His expression changed.
