"All right."

Mara led Sophie toward the ballroom doors.

Neither looked back.

Outside, the evening air felt cool against Mara's face.

The Bennett mansion stood on several acres of landscaped grounds in an affluent Atlanta suburb. Expensive cars lined the circular driveway, and guests were leaving in uncomfortable silence.

Some glanced toward Mara.

Others pretended not to notice.

She ignored them.

Sophie walked beside her clutching the small white handbag that matched her dress.

Her curls had begun escaping the ribbons.

Her eyes were swollen.

Mara opened the car door.

Helped her daughter into the seat.

Then fastened the belt carefully around the princess dress.

Sophie looked up.

"Mommy?"

Mara paused.

"Yes?"

"Was Claire's baby pretend?"

Mara felt her throat tighten.

She considered how much to explain.

The child had already seen enough.

Lying would only make the confusion worse.

"It looks like Claire was pretending to be pregnant."

Sophie stared.

"But Daddy was happy."

"I know."

"Is he sad now?"

Mara nodded.

"Yes, sweetheart. I think he is."

The little girl looked toward the mansion.

For a moment, she seemed unbearably small.

Then she asked, "Did his mommy make Claire lie?"

Mara closed her eyes briefly.

"We don't know all the details yet."

"But Claire said Grandma paid her."

"Yes."

Sophie looked down.

Then whispered, "Why would Grandma do that?"

Mara wished she had an answer that would make the world feel safe.

Instead, she touched her daughter's cheek.

"Sometimes adults make very wrong choices. Even adults who love us."

Sophie considered that.

"Did Grandma stop loving Daddy?"

Mara shook her head.

"I don't think so."

"Then why did she hurt him?"

The question cut through Mara.

She looked toward the mansion.

She had spent years asking a different version of it.

Why did Evelyn treat love as though it gave her permission to control everyone around her?

Why did Daniel accept that control?

Why had their family been required to absorb so much pain because one powerful woman could not tolerate uncertainty?

Mara looked back at Sophie.

"I don't know why Grandma made those choices."

She paused.

"But I know hurting someone isn't okay just because you love them."

The little girl nodded slowly.

Then asked, "Are you mad at me?"

Mara's heart broke.
