She looked toward him.

"I can't keep doing this."

His expression changed.

"Doing what?"

She laughed bitterly.

"Daniel."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Please don't."

Her eyes filled.

"I have spent years asking you to stand beside me when your mother crosses a boundary."

He looked down.

"I've tried."

"Sometimes."

He stared.

Mara continued.

"And every time she becomes angry, you retreat."

"That's not fair."

She swallowed.

"Maybe not."

For a moment, she seemed to lose the strength to argue.

Then she said quietly, "But I'm tired of being married to someone who treats defending me like an optional inconvenience."

The words struck Daniel.

He stepped backward.

"Mara."

She looked toward the staircase.

"I don't want Sophie growing up believing that love means being tolerated until somebody more powerful enters the room."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"You think I don't love you?"

She shook her head.

"No."

For a moment, he looked relieved.

Then she continued.

"I think you love me."

Her voice broke.

"But I don't think you've learned how to protect that love."

Silence filled the kitchen.

Rain tapped against the windows.

Daniel looked toward the suitcase.

Then toward his wife.

For a terrible moment, he wanted to beg her to stay.

Instead, he felt the old instinct rise.

Withdraw.

Wait.

Let the conflict end.

He looked down.

"If you need space, take it."

Mara stared.

She had hoped he would ask what they could do differently.

That he would suggest another counseling session.

That he would tell her he understood.

Instead, he had accepted the separation as though it were a scheduling decision.

She nodded slowly.

"All right."

Then she lifted the suitcase.

Daniel watched her walk toward the staircase.

Neither knew that Evelyn would later describe this evening as proof that Mara had abandoned her son.

Neither knew how heavily that description would shape everything that followed.

And neither understood that the damage was still unfolding.

The divorce was finalized after a year of separation.

It was not the vicious courtroom battle the newspapers later imagined.

Mara and Daniel worked through attorneys and a family mediator. They established a parenting plan, divided assets under an agreement both had reviewed independently, and tried to protect Sophie from unnecessary conflict.
