Not because he never received the letter.

Not because he did not know how to find the family.

Because he had been too ashamed to open it.

He lowered his head onto the desk.

Then began crying.

The sound echoed through the empty garage.

There were no other riders to impress.

No president's patch to defend.

No argument to win.

Only an old man sitting in a quiet workshop with three pages of words he should have read seven years earlier.

And a little girl who had almost sold her bicycle because the adults around her had run out of ways to keep food on the table.

For the first time in years, the old biker stopped searching for an excuse.

He had been wrong.

There was no way to make that fact smaller.

The only question now was what he would do with the years he had left.

The following morning, the widow woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of her daughter moving around the kitchen.

For a few seconds, she did not understand why the house felt different.

Then she remembered.

The groceries.

The motorcycles.

The enormous gray-bearded stranger.

And the photograph.

She remained lying in bed, staring at the ceiling.

Her stomach no longer ached with hunger. The previous evening, she had eaten a bowl of hot chicken soup and half a baked potato, then stopped because eating too quickly after days of very little food made her feel unwell.

Her daughter had eaten with her.

They sat together at the little kitchen table, surrounded by grocery bags, and the girl had talked almost continuously about the bikers.

Their enormous motorcycles.

Their leather vests.

The man with the red beard.

The one who carried two bags at once.

And especially the old biker who told her she could keep her bicycle.

At one point, the child asked whether her father had ridden a motorcycle just as big.

The widow had nodded.

"Yes, sweetheart."

"Was he good?"

"Very."

"Did he ride with those men?"

The mother hesitated.

"With some of them."

The girl looked delighted.

"Did he know Mr. Biker?"

Her mother felt something tighten inside her chest.
