Her mother turned immediately.
"No, baby."
She hurried toward her.
"You didn't do anything bad."
The child held up the money.
"I was trying to help."
Her mother's expression crumpled.
For a moment, she seemed unable to breathe.
Then she knelt and pulled the girl into her arms.
"I know."
Her voice broke.
"I know you were."
The little girl looked over her shoulder toward the bicycle.
"I didn't sell it."
Her mother began crying.
"I see that."
"The biker said I could keep it."
The woman pressed her face against her daughter's hair.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
The old biker looked away.
He had no wish to make her embarrassment worse.
He returned to his motorcycle.
Took out his phone.
And dialed a number he knew by heart.
A man answered on the second ring.
"Yeah?"
"It's me."
The voice changed immediately.
"Everything okay?"
The old biker looked toward the house.
"Need a few brothers."
"What happened?"
"Family needs groceries."
There was a pause.
"How many?"
He considered.
"Eight ought to do."
The man on the phone did not ask whether the family belonged to the club.
Did not ask for a name.
Did not ask whether the old biker would be reimbursed.
He simply answered.
"What do they need?"
The old man looked toward the little girl.
"Food. Some household supplies. Maybe blankets."
"Got it."
"And make sure somebody brings a hot meal."
There was a brief silence.
Then the voice softened.
"Kids involved?"
"One little girl."
Another pause.
"How old?"
"About six."
The man exhaled.
"All right. Give us half an hour."
The old biker looked toward the house.
"Thanks, brother."
"Always."
He ended the call.
Then turned back toward the mother.
She stood beside the porch, still holding her daughter's hand.
The money remained in her other palm.
The old biker approached slowly.
"Ma'am, I made a phone call."
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
"Some friends are bringing groceries."
She stared.
"You shouldn't have."
He nodded.
"Maybe."
She looked toward the street.
"Please. I don't want trouble."
His expression softened.
"Neither do I."
She swallowed.
He continued.
