Meyers looked toward Colton.

“You having a bad day?”

Vanessa said:

“Rachel.”

Meyers nodded.

“Right.”

She became professional.

The cuffs came off at 12:39 p.m.

Vanessa looked at the marks around her wrists.

Nothing severe.

Redness.

Pressure.

She flexed her fingers.

Meyers asked:

“Medical?”

“No.”

“Photographs anyway.”

Vanessa nodded.

Correct.

An officer photographed the wrists.

Vanessa provided her statement in an interview room.

Not the captain's office.

Not the supervisor's room.

A plain interview room.

She described everything from entry into Bellamy & Rowe to the station.

No adjectives where facts sufficed.

11:36 entered store.

11:39 first contact.

11:43 body camera activated after physical detention began.

11:44 handcuffs.

11:48 exited store.

11:51 transport radio description.

12:03 arrival precinct.

12:09 wallet searched.

12:11 command shield opened.

Her memory impressed Meyers.

“Do you always remember time like this?”

Vanessa leaned back.

“Only when irritated.”

Meyers smiled.

Then:

“Do you want Colton suspended?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not my call.”

“You're incoming commander.”

“Which is why it absolutely isn't my call.”

Meyers nodded.

“Good.”

Vanessa continued:

“I do want the review to include prior complaints.”

Meyers looked up.

“You know there are prior complaints?”

“I read the district file.”

“As incoming captain.”

“Yes.”

“Anything specific?”

Vanessa thought.

“There were three complaints involving language about suspicious behavior without clearly articulated conduct.”

“Colton?”

“Two.”

“Third?”

“Different officer.”

Meyers made a note.

Vanessa continued:

“I also want the store's history.”

“Calls.”

“Officer interactions.”

“Any informal arrangements.”

Meyers raised an eyebrow.

“You think this is bigger than him?”

“I don't know.”

“That is why we're investigating.”

Meyers nodded.

“Fair.”

Outside, video had already reached social media.

Not the badge reveal.

That happened inside.

But the store confrontation.

A Black woman in a jeweled gold blazer bent against a perfume counter while a white officer cuffed her.

The sales associate protesting.

The officer dismissing her.

Vanessa warning him.

Someone had captured the line:

When we reach your station, your career will die before mine does.

Without context, it sounded almost theatrical.

Then context arrived.

A reporter identified Vanessa Cole as the incoming commander of Precinct 42.

The story exploded.

By three in the afternoon, satellite trucks were outside the station.

Vanessa hated every second.

The commissioner called.

“What the hell happened?”

Vanessa sat in an empty office.

“I was arrested.”

“I gathered that.”

“Then why ask?”

The commissioner sighed.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want the command delayed?”
