“If you really live there, this should take thirty seconds.”

“Correct.”

“Then why are you making it difficult?”

Evelyn almost sighed.

“I am not making verification difficult.”

“You are refusing a lawful request.”

“Which law requires a homeowner standing at her mailbox to produce identification because somebody reported her as suspicious?”

Darius looked at her.

Then smiled without humor.

“You lawyers on television have people convinced every police interaction is a constitutional seminar.”

Evelyn said nothing.

His smile faded.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You looked like you wanted to say something.”

“No.”

That answer irritated him more than any argument.

He looked at the leather folder beneath her arm.

“What’s in there?”

“Documents.”

“What kind?”

“Private documents.”

“Hand them to me.”

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

“Because they are private.”

“Related to this property?”

“Some indirectly.”

“Then I need to see them.”

“You absolutely do not.”

Darius stepped closer and reached.

Evelyn moved the folder back.

“Officer.”

“Give me the folder.”

“No.”

He grabbed it.

Not violently at first.

One hand around the leather edge.

Evelyn kept her grip.

“This is unnecessary.”

“Let go.”

“It contains confidential federal material.”

That should have stopped him.

Instead, it sounded to Darius like escalation.

His face changed.

“Federal material?”

“Yes.”

“What are you pretending to be?”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“Excuse me?”

He pulled harder.

The folder came free.

Several envelopes slid from Evelyn’s other hand and fluttered onto the grass.

Darius opened the folder.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Do not read those.”

He shifted sideways, blocking her.

The first page bore a federal court heading.

Darius barely looked.

He tossed the folder onto the hood of his cruiser.

Papers spread beneath his hand.

One page slid toward the windshield.

Evelyn reached for it.

Darius slapped her hand away.

Hard enough to sting.

For the first time, Evelyn’s composure changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

Pure and immediate.

“Do not touch me again.”

Darius pointed at her.

“Back up.”

“You struck my hand.”

“I redirected you.”

“You struck my hand.”

“Back up.”

Evelyn remained where she was.

Darius reached toward her shoulder.

“Ma’am.”

She said quietly, “Think very carefully about the next ten seconds.”

To him, that sounded like a threat.

Later, that sentence would appear in his report as evidence of intimidation.

On the body camera, it would sound exactly like what it was.

A warning.

Darius took hold of her upper arm.

Evelyn twisted instinctively away.

Not enough to escape.

Enough for him to say:

“Stop resisting.”

“I am not resisting.”

He moved her toward the cruiser.

Evelyn planted one foot.
