Evelyn remained still.

He unlocked one wrist.

Then the other.

Pain returned sharply as she lowered her arms.

Rachel Brooks reached her first.

“Judge Carter, are you hurt?”

“My shoulder is unhappy.”

Rachel looked at Darius with fury.

Evelyn said:

“Do not interfere with his body camera.”

Everyone paused.

She looked directly at Chief Wallace.

“Is it recording?”

The chief stared at the green indicator.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Darius looked confused.

The chief turned toward him.

“Do you know who you just handcuffed?”

Evelyn spoke before he could answer.

“That should not matter.”

The chief looked at her.

She flexed her wrist.

“It matters administratively.”

“It should not matter constitutionally.”

Darius’s face had gone pale.

Rachel picked up the first page from the cruiser hood.

She looked at him.

“Senior United States District Judge Evelyn Carter.”

Darius swallowed.

Rachel continued.

“Special master overseeing Bellwood Police Department compliance under the federal consent decree.”

Nothing moved.

Even the breeze seemed to stop.

Darius looked toward Evelyn.

Then the mansion.

Then the chief.

The meaning arrived piece by piece.

The woman he assumed was a housekeeper or trespasser was the federal official monitoring his department.

The enormous house belonged to her.

The police chief had been sitting inside it.

The documents he threw onto the cruiser were materials concerning police misconduct.

And his body camera had recorded every second.

Darius opened his mouth.

Evelyn raised one hand.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

She looked at the scattered papers.

Then at him.

“You weren't called here to investigate a judge.”

Darius swallowed.

“No, ma’am.”

“You were called here to investigate an elderly Black woman somebody claimed did not belong in this neighborhood.”

The chief looked uncomfortable.

Evelyn continued.

“That woman remains the person whose rights matter.”

Darius said quietly, “I understand.”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You understand my title.”

“Those are not the same thing.”

Silence.

Then Chief Wallace’s phone vibrated.

He looked down.

Dispatch.

He answered.

“Wallace.”

He listened.

His expression changed.

Evelyn noticed.

“What?”

The chief did not answer immediately.

Rachel watched him.

“Chief?”

Wallace lowered the phone.

“The original caller.”

Darius looked over.

“What about them?”

The chief stared at his screen.

“Dispatch just sent the call notes.”

Evelyn waited.

Wallace’s face became harder.

“The caller gave your name.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“My name?”

“Evelyn Carter.”

Nobody spoke.

Darius looked genuinely confused now.

Chief Wallace scrolled.

“The caller said an elderly Black woman named Evelyn Carter was pretending to own the residence.”

Rachel Brooks stepped closer.

“That is not a mistaken neighbor.”

“No.”
