The police officer’s forearm struck the middle of the Black woman’s upper back before anyone in the marble corridor understood that the confrontation had turned physical.

Her silver federal case folder hit the wall first.

Then her shoulder.

Then her cheek came within inches of the pale stone.

The sound echoed through one of the most secure judicial corridors in Washington, D.C.

The woman did not scream.

That was what unnerved the young court clerk standing twenty feet away.

Most people screamed when a muscular police officer twice their weight drove them into a wall.

This woman did not.

She simply went still.

Her right hand remained wrapped around the edge of the silver folder pressed against her chest. Her bright red tailored suit stood out fiercely against the gray-white marble surrounding her. Straight shoulder-length black hair had fallen partly across one eye, but when she turned her face enough to look at the officer behind her, there was no panic in her expression.

Only fury.

Controlled fury.

The officer tightened his grip.

He was forty-eight years old, white, heavily built, with cropped graying hair and the thick neck of a man who had spent decades wearing body armor beneath his uniform. His dark navy police shirt pulled tight across his shoulders. A badge gleamed over his chest. Radio, handcuffs, baton, firearm, and spare magazines crowded the duty belt around his waist.

He twisted the woman’s left wrist higher.

“You don’t belong in this corridor, dirt lady.”

The clerk’s stomach dropped.

The woman’s eyes hardened.

“Take your hand off me.”

The officer leaned closer.

“You had your chance.”

“I told you where I’m going.”

“And I told you to stop.”

“I did stop.”

“You reached inside your jacket.”

“For my credential.”

“That’s what they all say.”

The woman inhaled slowly.

The clerk would remember that breath later.

Not because it was loud.
