His eyes moved toward her red blazer.

A small federal credential wallet had fallen partly open near the wall where he had knocked it from her hand.

The words were clearly visible now.

United States Judiciary.

His mouth opened.

Judge Cole turned her head slightly.

“Remove your arm.”

He did.

Immediately.

She stepped away from the wall.

Her left shoulder lowered carefully.

Pain flashed across her face for less than a second.

The senior marshal saw it.

His anger deepened.

The police officer raised both hands slightly.

“I didn’t know.”

Judge Cole bent, picked up her credential, and looked at him.

“That,” she said, “is the problem.”

One of the deputy marshals moved between them.

Another took the officer’s wrist.

The officer jerked back.

“What are you doing?”

“Sir, keep your hands visible.”

“I’m police.”

“So are the people who just watched what happened.”

“I was enforcing restricted access.”

The senior marshal stepped closer.

“No.”

“You were assigned to the public atrium and the east screening station.”

“You were explicitly told not to perform independent enforcement in the judges’ corridor.”

The officer stared.

The young clerk watched his face collapse in stages.

Confidence first.

Then confusion.

Then calculation.

Then fear.

He looked toward Judge Cole.

“Your Honor, if you’d just identified yourself—”

She cut him off.

“I did.”

“You said you were supposed to be back here.”

“I told you I was a federal judge.”

“You reached for something.”

“My credential.”

“You moved quickly.”

Judge Cole looked toward the ceiling.

Two cameras.

One at either end of the corridor.

Then at the officer’s chest.

Body camera.

Its small status light glowed.

“Good,” she said.

The officer followed her eyes.

His face changed again.

Judge Cole continued.

“Then nobody has to rely on either of our memories.”

The senior marshal turned toward one of his deputies.

“Secure every recording.”

“Yes, sir.”
