Hollister’s expression changed.

Iris continued.

“You supplied the rest.”

Davis handed the credential back.

His fingers trembled.

“I’m sorry.”

Iris looked at him.

“Not yet.”

Davis blinked.

“What?”

“Your body camera needs to be preserved.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Your sergeant’s too.”

“Yes.”

“Vehicle video.”

“Yes.”

“Personal phone.”

Hollister immediately put his phone into his pocket.

Iris noticed.

“Do not delete anything.”

“You don’t get to seize my phone.”

“I didn’t say I did.”

Hollister looked away.

Iris turned toward Davis.

“Call your supervisor.”

Hollister snapped, “I am the supervisor.”

Iris met his eyes.

“Then call yours.”

Police Chief Raymond Keller received the call at 8:41.

He was eating oatmeal at his desk.

He almost did not answer.

The display showed Davis.

Keller picked up.

“What?”

Davis sounded strange.

“Chief, we need you on Main.”

“What happened?”

Pause.

“Sergeant Hollister had an incident.”

Keller closed his eyes.

Those words never meant anything good.

“With who?”

Another pause.

“A federal investigator.”

Keller opened his eyes.

“What?”

Davis explained.

Not well.

Kick.

Gutter.

Credential.

Complaints.

Keller stood so fast the chair rolled backward.

“Do not let Hollister leave.”

Davis lowered his voice.

“He’s standing right here.”

“Put distance between them.”

“I’m trying.”

“Is she injured?”

“Shoulder. Maybe face. Her glasses broke.”

Keller grabbed his jacket.

“Call EMS.”

“She says she can stand.”

“I don’t care. Call them.”

Keller was out the door in forty seconds.

By the time he reached Main Street, three additional officers had arrived.

So had an ambulance.

Iris sat on the rear step while a paramedic examined her shoulder.

Hollister stood near his SUV with arms crossed.

His body language said anger.

Not concern.

Davis stood alone.

Keller saw the backpack.

Mud.

Broken folder.

Crowd.

He stopped.

This was not going to disappear.

“Ms. Green?”

Iris looked up.

“Chief Keller.”

He flinched.

She knew him.

Of course she knew him.

He approached.

“I’m Raymond Keller.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

Iris looked toward Hollister.

Then Davis.

Then the cameras.

“I want all digital evidence placed under immediate preservation.”

Keller nodded.

“Absolutely.”

“Body cameras.”

“Yes.”

“Vehicle cameras.”
