The Dean did not.

"The problem was hers."

"That seems difficult to use as a disqualification."

Students laughed.

The Professor's face reddened.

He grabbed his laptop.

"This is absurd."

The Dean stepped aside.

"You may leave."

He froze.

Something about permission wounded him more than accusation.

He walked toward the side exit.

As he passed the Black woman, he stopped.

For one second, anger and disbelief competed across his face.

He lowered his voice.

"You think this makes you one of us?"

She looked at him.

"No."

He waited.

She continued:

"I thought mathematics already did."

He left.

The side door slammed.

Only then did the room breathe.

The Dean looked toward the Black woman.

"What is your name?"

The question should have been simple.

Instead, it hurt.

The Black woman stared at her.

"You rejected an eighty-page fellowship application with my student ID on every page."

The Dean's face changed.

"You're right."

"I am."

"I'm sorry."

Students watched.

The Dean did something unexpected.

She did not explain.

Did not say the committee handled thousands of applications.

Did not blame administrative systems.

She simply repeated:

"I'm sorry."

The Black woman nodded once.

Not forgiveness.

Acknowledgment.

The Research Officer approached.

"We need to speak privately."

The young woman looked toward the janitorial cart halfway up the aisle.

"My shift isn't over."

Several students laughed softly.

The Dean did not.

She said:

"We'll contact Facilities."

The young woman looked directly at her.

"No."

The Dean frowned.

"What?"

"I don't want somebody else getting written up because I'm suddenly important."

The room went quiet again.

She walked toward the cart.

The Dean followed with her eyes.
