Not openly cruel.

Something worse.

Amused.

"Halston is expensive."

"Yes."

"Scholarships help."

"When you get them."

The Professor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Well."

He pointed toward the board.

"Perhaps today is your lucky day."

She looked again at the proof.

This time longer.

A graduate student in the second row said quietly:

"Come on, Professor."

The Professor turned.

"What?"

"Let her leave."

"She said she recognized it."

He looked back toward the Black woman.

"Didn't you?"

She met his eyes.

"Yes."

"Then fifty thousand dollars seems generous."

He picked up a piece of chalk.

Held it toward her.

"Unless you would rather stick to cleaning what smarter people leave behind."

The room changed.

Not instantly.

But visibly.

A few students stared.

Someone whispered:

"Jesus."

The Black woman's fingers tightened around the mop handle.

For one second, she looked down.

The Professor interpreted that as victory.

He turned back toward the hall.

"As I was saying—"

The mop clicked against the railing.

The Professor stopped.

The Black woman had leaned it carefully beside the stairs.

She removed the disposable gloves from her hands.

Folded them.

Placed them on the cart.

Then began walking down the center aisle.

Students turned as she passed.

No hesitation.

No hurry.

She reached the front.

The Professor still held the chalk.

She extended her hand.

The hall was completely silent.

He stared at her palm.

Then at her face.

"You actually want to try?"

"You're offering fifty thousand."

"Yes."

"And any method?"

"Within mathematics."

She held his gaze.

"Good."
