The young woman retrieved her gloves.

One graduate student stood.

"I'll do it."

She looked at him.

"What?"

"The floor."

He pointed toward the mop.

"Your shift."

A second student stood.

Then another.

The woman almost laughed.

"You don't know how to use the equipment."

The graduate student looked offended.

"I can solve stochastic differential equations."

She glanced at the bucket.

"That wasn't my concern."

The room laughed.

For the first time that morning, she did too.

Twenty minutes later, Lecture Hall One looked ridiculous.

Dozens of mathematics students collecting cups.

Moving discarded paper.

Stacking abandoned coffee containers.

One doctoral candidate tried operating the mop wringer and splashed dirty water onto his trousers.

The Black woman shook her head.

"You've made it worse."

He looked toward her.

"Then instruct me."

She did.

The Dean watched from the front.

Something complicated crossed her face.

The young woman had solved the hardest problem in the room.

Then returned to cleaning because her hourly wage still mattered.

That reality would haunt the Dean longer than the scandal itself.

The fifty-thousand-dollar check remained in the black case.

The university's general counsel advised nobody to touch it until the Professor's legal team clarified whether the challenge constituted an enforceable promise.

Students immediately began arguing contract law online.

The Black woman did not care.

At least not that morning.

She finished her shift.

Changed in a facilities locker room.

Then attended her eleven-thirty numerical-analysis seminar.

The professor teaching that course had already seen the videos.

So had everyone else.

When she entered, conversation stopped.

She hated that more than laughter.

She took her usual seat.

A student beside her whispered:

"You're everywhere online."

She opened her notebook.

"Great."

"One video has two million views."

"Even better."

"Do you want to see?"

"No."

The seminar professor entered.

Paused.

Looked toward her.

Then said:

"Before we begin, I think—"

The Black woman interrupted.
