The police sergeant shoved the Black man against his own red Ferrari while the wealthy blonde woman standing across the driveway smiled with satisfaction.

"Hands where I can see them! Step away from the vehicle!"

The man's name was Malik Carter. He was thirty-five years old, six feet two inches tall, with deep-brown skin, a muscular athletic build, and short neatly faded black hair. He wore a fitted navy-blue polo shirt, beige trousers, and clean white sneakers. In his right hand was a Ferrari key fob, and inside his pocket was a phone containing the vehicle's registration, purchase documents, and insurance information.

The house behind him belonged to him. The driveway belonged to him. The brilliant red Ferrari 488 GTB, with black alloy wheels and yellow brake calipers, had been purchased with money from his own bank account.

But Sergeant Daniel Rourke wasn't interested in any of those details.

He was forty-three, white, stocky, and powerfully built, with short light-brown hair and a black police uniform stretched tightly across his broad shoulders. His silver badge caught the afternoon sunlight as he stepped closer, his hand hovering near the equipment on his duty belt.

"Don't make me tell you twice!" he barked.

Malik raised both hands slowly.

"Officer, I'm standing in my own driveway."

Behind the sergeant, an elegant blonde woman laughed.

Her name was Victoria Whitmore. She was forty-eight years old, strikingly attractive, and dressed in an expensive beige tailored pantsuit with matching designer heels, gold earrings, and a diamond bracelet. Her perfectly styled blonde hair fell over her shoulders, and a white luxury SUV sat parked across the street near another enormous suburban mansion.

She had called the police seventeen minutes earlier.

Her accusation was simple.

A suspicious Black man was attempting to steal a Ferrari from one of the neighborhood's expensive homes.

She had insisted the man didn't belong there.

Now she stood beside the manicured lawn holding her smartphone, watching the situation unfold with the smug confidence of someone who had never expected an officer to question her judgment.

"Arrest him!" she shouted. "That Ferrari can't possibly belong to him!"

Malik turned toward her.

"Ma'am, I've told you three times. That's my car."

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"Of course it is, sweetheart. And I suppose that mansion is yours too?"

"It is."

She laughed again.

"Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that?"

Sergeant Rourke stepped between them.

"Stop talking!"

Malik looked directly at the officer.

"I'm not resisting you. I'm asking you to check the registration."
