It was the idea that information could reveal problems people couldn't see from the outside.

Years later, that curiosity became the foundation of his career.

By twenty-six, Malik had developed a software platform that helped commercial transportation companies reduce empty vehicle trips, monitor maintenance schedules, and identify expensive operational inefficiencies.

The business began in a rented office above a small printing shop.

He worked with two friends from college.

They had little money.

Their equipment was secondhand.

And the building's air conditioner failed almost every summer.

But the software solved a real problem.

A regional trucking company became their first major customer.

Then another.

Then a national logistics provider.

Within five years, the company employed more than one hundred people.

Its products were used by transportation operators across the country, and its revenue grew far beyond anything Malik imagined as a college student repairing laptops in his dormitory.

When a larger technology group offered to acquire the business, Malik hesitated.

He'd spent years building it.

But the acquisition would allow the platform to reach customers his small company couldn't serve alone.

It would also give him enough financial security to support his parents and pursue projects he'd been thinking about for years.

After careful negotiations, he agreed.

The deal made him extraordinarily wealthy.

But the first thing he purchased wasn't a sports car.

It was a new roof for his parents' house.

The second was a reliable vehicle for his mother.

And the third was a modern lift for his father's repair garage, even though Samuel was nearing retirement.

His father stared at the equipment when it arrived.

"Son, you didn't have to do all this."

Malik smiled.

"I know."

Samuel looked toward the lift.

Then toward him.

For a moment, his eyes filled.

"You worked hard."

Malik shook his head.

"So did you."

His father laughed softly.

Then pulled him into an embrace.

Malik bought the red Ferrari two years later.

He remembered seeing a Ferrari in a magazine when he was nine, sitting on the floor of his father's garage.

Samuel had been rebuilding an engine.

Malik held up the photograph.

"Dad, I'm going to buy one of these someday."

His father looked at the picture.

Then at his son.

He smiled.

"That's a beautiful car."

Malik nodded eagerly.

"Fast too."

Samuel laughed.

"I'm sure."

Then he asked something Malik never forgot.

"What are you going to do with it when you get it?"

The boy looked confused.

"Drive it."

His father nodded.
