He wasn't in a hurry.
His driver knew the arrival time.
The board meeting wasn't until the following morning.
He had a late dinner scheduled with his operations team, but nothing that couldn't be moved.
Darla rose from her seat as soon as the plane reached the gate.
She adjusted her dress, collected her clutch, and moved toward the aisle.
For a moment, she appeared ready to leave without another word.
Then she stopped beside Evan's chair.
“Mr. Cole.”
He looked up.
“Yes?”
She glanced toward the remaining passengers.
“Could we speak privately?”
Evan considered the request.
“Through the appropriate company channels, yes.”
She swallowed.
“I mean now.”
He closed his laptop.
“Not aboard the aircraft.”
Her face tightened.
“Please. I need to explain.”
He stood.
His height made the difference between them more obvious than it had been when he remained in the aisle earlier.
Darla looked up.
Evan spoke quietly.
“Mrs. Whitmore, I'm aware that you've had an unexpected day.”
She blinked.
“But you've also given me serious reasons to question your judgment.”
Her eyes filled with panic.
“Are you going to fire me?”
Evan paused.
Then answered.
“Your leadership role will be evaluated through the company's governance process, based on the facts and your overall performance.”
Darla stared.
“So you're not denying it.”
“I'm not making employment decisions in an airplane aisle.”
A passenger walking past slowed slightly.
Evan continued.
“You'll have an opportunity to respond to the concerns raised.”
Darla looked away.
Then whispered, “You're destroying my life.”
Evan's expression changed.
He studied her for a moment.
Then said something she didn't expect.
“No, Mrs. Whitmore. I'm asking you to take responsibility for your own behavior.”
She looked up sharply.
He continued.
“Those are not the same thing.”
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Evan lifted his briefcase.
“Good evening.”
He stepped into the aisle and walked toward the aircraft door.
Darla remained standing beside the seat.
She watched him leave.
The flight attendant thanked him as he passed.
A few passengers nodded respectfully.
He didn't look back.
And Darla realized that the most powerful person she'd met all day had never once needed to shout.
By the time Evan reached his hotel, the video had already begun circulating.
A passenger had recorded part of the confrontation.
The footage showed Darla seated in the cream-colored chair, one black stiletto stretched across the aisle.
