But the blonde woman's face flushed.
She hadn't expected a Black passenger to contradict her so calmly.
She certainly hadn't expected a flight attendant to support him.
Her voice rose.
“Don't just stand there looking at me. Tell him to leave!”
Lena took a breath.
“Ma'am, I need you to lower your voice.”
The woman's eyes widened.
“Excuse me?”
“We can resolve this without disturbing the other passengers.”
The woman leaned forward.
“I'm being disturbed!”
Then she turned toward Evan.
“First class isn't a handout. You can't just walk up here because you've got a fancy suit and think you deserve special treatment.”
Evan's expression changed slightly.
Not enough to reveal anger.
But enough for Lena to notice.
He looked directly at the woman.
“My ticket is paid for. My seat is assigned. I'm asking you to move.”
The blonde woman gave him an exaggerated smile.
“Then keep asking.”
She stretched her leg farther into the aisle.
The pointed toe of her black stiletto pressed against his shin.
Evan shifted back.
“Please move your foot.”
She didn't.
Instead, she pushed her heel against the side of his briefcase.
The leather case swung slightly in his hand.
“Oops.”
A couple of passengers gasped.
The woman smiled.
“You're blocking the aisle.”
Evan looked at her shoe.
Then at her face.
“You put your foot in front of me.”
“Maybe you should learn to watch where you're going.”
He remained silent.
That seemed to irritate her even more.
She leaned toward him and slapped the boarding pass out of his hand with her gloved fingers.
The card fluttered toward the carpet.
“There. Now go find somewhere else to sit.”
The cabin fell silent.
Evan looked down at the boarding pass.
For several seconds, he didn't move.
Then he bent, picked it up, and straightened.
He carefully brushed the card with his thumb.
The gesture was so unhurried that the blonde woman's smile began to fade.
He looked at Lena.
“Would you please ask your lead flight attendant to join us?”
Lena nodded.
“Yes, sir.”
The blonde woman scoffed.
“Oh, wonderful. Now we're getting management involved.”
Evan didn't respond.
She leaned back.
“You think you're going to embarrass me?”
He looked at her.
“No.”
She smiled triumphantly.
Then he finished.
“You seem perfectly capable of doing that yourself.”
Several passengers reacted.
One covered his mouth.
Another looked down quickly.
