Henry stepped in.

Doors closed.

She hit garage.

“What happened?”

“He found me.”

“Did you get proof?”

Henry pulled out the drive.

Alexandra exhaled.

“Yes.”

“More than proof.”

“What?”

“Corbin worked at Dynatech.”

Her eyes widened.

“He stole it then.”

“I think so.”

Garage.

They rushed toward Alexandra’s car.

Henry stopped.

“What?”

“If he controls internal security, he'll expect us to go to lawyers.”

“Where else?”

Henry looked across the city.

“Diner.”

Alexandra stared.

“What?”

“Twenty-four hour.”

“Nobody thinks CEOs hide in diners.”

Ten minutes later, they sat beneath fluorescent lights drinking terrible coffee.

Henry explained everything.

Alexandra listened.

No interruptions.

When he finished, she whispered:

“He destroyed you.”

“Yes.”

“And now he's trying to destroy me using the same theft.”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the drive.

“Why?”

“Because the original work is evidence.”

“If Reed Mobility succeeds using technology derived from it, somebody eventually compares patents.”

“His career collapses.”

“So he makes the technology fail.”

“Blames architecture.”

“Blames me.”

“Removes you.”

“Then becomes the man who cleans up.”

Alexandra stared toward the window.

Rain had started again.

Soft this time.

She laughed once.

“What?”

“Twenty-four hours ago my car died.”

Henry smiled faintly.

“Bad relay.”

“If it hadn't…”

“You'd still have one hundred engineers.”

“And no answer.”

Henry looked toward her.

“You were going to find one.”

“Don't flatter me.”

“I’m not.”

Alexandra met his eyes.

Something quiet passed between them.

Then she asked:

“What do we do?”

Henry leaned back.

“Make him think he won.”

Alexandra smiled.

There was nothing warm in it.

“Now you're talking like a CEO.”

At 7:00 a.m., Alexandra entered Corbin’s office alone.

Henry waited downstairs.

The board received a hidden live audio feed.

Alexandra sat across from Corbin.

“I’m done.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

“I’ll resign.”

“Good.”

“I'll blame Henry.”

Corbin relaxed.

Perfect.

Then Alexandra asked:

“Why did you do it?”

Corbin laughed.

Because powerful men often confuse victory with permission to explain themselves.

He told her.

Dynatech.

Henry.

His dying wife.

The stolen design.

The false failure.

The blacklist.

Reed Mobility.

Sabotage.

The plan to take Alexandra’s position.

Every word traveled directly to the board.

When Corbin finished, Alexandra stood.

“Thank you.”

He frowned.

“For what?”

The door opened.

Security.

Two police officers.

Board chair.

Corbin’s face changed.

“No.”

Alexandra looked at him.

“Yes.”

Henry watched from the parking garage as Corbin was escorted outside.

For eleven years Henry had imagined revenge.

Sometimes.

Quietly.

A meeting where somebody apologized.
