A court judgment.
A headline.
A confession.
Reality felt smaller.
Corbin looked frightened.
Human.
Pathetic.
Henry felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
Alexandra found him twenty minutes later.
He sat on the hood of his pickup.
Sunrise reflected off glass towers.
“It’s over.”
Henry looked toward her.
“Is it?”
“The board saw everything.”
“Your evidence.”
“His confession.”
“Legal is contacting Dynatech.”
Henry laughed faintly.
“Good luck.”
“They already called me.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“I made something clear.”
“What?”
“Reed Mobility doesn't sue Dynatech for enabling stolen intellectual property if they formally clear your record.”
Henry stared.
“Alexandra.”
“Full reinstatement of employment history.”
“Back pay negotiation.”
“Public correction.”
“Patent attribution review.”
“You can't demand that.”
“I already did.”
He stood.
“Why?”
Her expression softened.
“Because it's right.”
Henry looked away.
“That answer is dangerous.”
“So I've heard.”
She smiled.
“Reed Mobility wants to offer you director of systems engineering.”
Henry turned.
“No.”
Alexandra blinked.
“What?”
“Not today.”
“Why?”
“Because yesterday I was unemployed.”
“Last night I thought security might arrest me.”
“Today you're offering me a department.”
“I need time.”
She nodded.
“Fair.”
Henry looked at his truck.
“I need to go home.”
“Bonnie?”
“Yes.”
He started walking.
Alexandra caught his arm gently.
Henry stopped.
Their eyes met.
Her hand remained there.
Neither spoke for a second.
Then Alexandra said:
“Thank you.”
Henry looked at her fingers on his sleeve.
Then at her.
“You stopped in the rain.”
“So did you.”
“I was the one broken down.”
Henry smiled.
“Maybe not the only one.”
Alexandra’s expression changed.
That landed.
She released him.
Henry drove home.
Bonnie ran into the driveway before the truck fully stopped.
“Dad!”
Henry got out.
She collided with him.
He lifted her.
“You came back.”
“I promised.”
“You always say that.”
“And?”
“You're usually late.”
Henry laughed.
“Fair.”
They went for pancakes.
Bonnie ate chocolate chips directly from the bowl when she thought he wasn't looking.
He let her.
“What happened?”
Henry considered.
“Someone stole something from me a long time ago.”
“Did you get it back?”
“Maybe.”
“What?”
“My name.”
Bonnie frowned.
“You already had a name.”
Henry smiled.
“Exactly.”
Three months later, Henry returned to Reed Mobility.
Not as a consultant.
Director of Systems Engineering.
His office was modest by executive standards.
Huge by his.
On his first day, he placed one photograph on the desk.
Bonnie.
Missing tooth.
Same photograph Alexandra had seen on the highway.
