“No.”

“Clearly.”

Marcus read the lab report again.

Then:

“Get out.”

“Marcus.”

“Get out.”

“We need to talk about Ethan.”

“No.”

“He deserves—”

Marcus stood.

“You will not use my son as a way to force yourself into this house tonight.”

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

“I love him.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You barely know him.”

“I’m trying.”

“Secretly.”

“Because Claire—”

“Stop blaming Claire for the choices you happily made inside my home.”

Daniel stood too.

“I have rights.”

The sentence changed the atmosphere instantly.

Marcus stared.

“Rights.”

Daniel realized too late.

“I mean legally—”

“I know what you mean.”

“Marcus, I’m not threatening you.”

“You just did.”

“No.”

“You found out biology gave you a new word and now you’re using it.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I don’t want to take Ethan away from you.”

“That is good because you cannot.”

“I want to be in his life.”

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

“Then the next thing you do is leave.”

Daniel stared.

“I’m serious.”

“Tonight is not about what you want.”

“He is seven.”

“He is upstairs believing I am his father.”

“You will not walk up there and detonate his identity because you are tired of carrying your guilt.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“He deserves truth.”

“Yes.”

“From people who care enough to tell him safely.”

“Not during a birthday explosion.”

Daniel looked down.

Marcus opened the front door.

“Leave.”

Daniel pulled on his coat.

At the threshold, he turned.

“I am sorry.”

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel continued:

“For Austin.”

“For the last eight months.”

“For all of it.”

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“You should be sorry that when your brother trusted you, you kept deciding your fear mattered more than his right to know his own life.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Then left.

Marcus closed the door.

Locked it.

He stood there for a long time.

Claire came downstairs.

She saw the old test in his hand.

Her face collapsed.

“Marcus.”

He turned.

“You knew.”

She stopped.

He held up the report.

“You knew when he was four months old.”

Claire began crying.

He felt something inside himself become permanently different.

Not dead.

Just rearranged.

“You let me raise our son for seven years knowing.”

“I was terrified.”

“You married me knowing there was a possibility.”

“Yes.”

“You tested him.”

“Yes.”

“You found out.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

Claire’s voice trembled.

“I chose you.”

Marcus stared.

She continued desperately.

“I chose our family.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You chose silence.”

“That is not the same.”

“I knew if I told you, I could lose everything.”

“So you decided I would.”

“What?”

“My ability to choose.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You took away every choice I should have had.”

“Whether to stay married.”

“Whether to confront Daniel.”

“Whether to raise Ethan knowing the truth.”

“Whether to prepare for this day.”

“You made all those choices for me.”

Claire covered her face.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

He swallowed.

“But love without truth is control.”

Claire lowered her hands.

“I never wanted Daniel.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You slept with him three times this year.”
