“That is enough.”

Marcus looked at his wife.

Her eyes were wet now.

“Where?”

he repeated.

Claire whispered:

“I can explain.”

Behind her, Ethan answered innocently.

“Mommy’s room.”

There were moments when people imagined anger as heat.

Marcus discovered real shock was cold.

It emptied his arms.

His chest.

Even his thoughts.

The room did not spin.

It sharpened.

He noticed absurd details.

A balloon turning slowly near the ceiling vent.

One chocolate fingerprint on the coffee table.

A piece of blue wrapping paper under Claire’s shoe.

The tiny plastic side mirror on Ethan’s new car.

Then Marcus looked at his wife.

Claire looked like someone standing at the edge of a roof.

“Tell me he’s confused.”

She said nothing.

“Claire.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“It’s complicated.”

Marcus laughed.

Once.

Quietly.

That frightened her more than shouting would have.

“Is Daniel sleeping with you?”

“Marcus—”

“Yes or no.”

“It isn’t that simple.”

“There are six words in the question.”

He stepped toward her.

“Is my brother sleeping with my wife?”

Ethan shrank slightly.

Marcus saw it.

Instantly hated himself.

He turned toward his son.

“Buddy.”

Ethan’s eyes were wide.

Marcus took a breath.

“I need you to go upstairs for a little while.”

“I want my car.”

“You can take it.”

Claire said:

“No, leave it here.”

Marcus’s head snapped toward her.

“Why?”

Claire froze.

The question carried more than the toy.

Marcus looked back at Ethan.

“Take your car.”

The boy hugged it.

“Am I in trouble?”

Marcus’s heart broke.

“No.”

“Because I told?”

“No.”

“Mom said—”

Claire cut in.

“Ethan.”

Marcus raised one hand.

“Let him finish.”

The boy looked at Claire.

Then Marcus.

“Mom said Uncle Daniel visits were a surprise.”

Marcus slowly turned.

“A surprise.”

Ethan nodded.

“She said you’d be sad if I told too early.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at her.

“How long have you been teaching our son to keep secrets from me?”

“They weren’t secrets like that.”

“What kind were they?”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

Claire cried now.

“Marcus, please.”

Ethan stood.

He clutched the car awkwardly.

“I’m sorry.”

Marcus moved to him immediately.

“No.”

He knelt.

“Look at me.”

Ethan did.

“You never apologize for telling me the truth.”

The child’s lip trembled.

“Okay.”

“You understand?”

“Yes.”

“Go to your room.”

“Can I watch TV?”

Marcus nearly laughed from the absurdity.

“Yes.”

“Can I take cake?”

“Yes.”

“Two pieces?”

Despite everything, Marcus smiled faintly.

“One.”

Ethan thought.

“Big?”

“Go.”

The boy hurried toward the stairs.

At the first step, he turned.

“Dad?”

Marcus looked.

“Yeah?”

“Do you still like the car?”

The question almost dropped him.

He swallowed.

“I love the car.”
