“Daniel is Ethan’s biological father.”

The sentence entered the room.

Nothing happened.

No explosion.

No sound.

Marcus simply stood there.

For one second.

Then another.

Claire took a step.

He raised a hand.

She stopped.

Marcus looked up at the ceiling.

The cartoon audience laughed upstairs.

Ethan laughed too.

That sound almost killed him.

Marcus whispered:

“How?”

Claire cried.

“Marcus.”

“How?”

“We…”

She stopped.

He stared.

“Seven years ago?”

Claire nodded.

“When?”

“Before Ethan was born.”

“I know how pregnancy works.”

His voice rose.

Then he forced it down.

“When?”

Claire answered:

“The Austin conference.”

Marcus remembered.

Eight years earlier.

He had been thirty-one.

Claire twenty-eight.

They had been engaged.

Wedding five months away.

Marcus’s father had just undergone bypass surgery.

Marcus had canceled the Austin trip at the last minute to stay at the hospital.

Claire went because she was scheduled to give a marketing presentation.

Daniel was there too.

Daniel had worked for the family company then.

Marcus looked at her.

“You slept with my brother while we were engaged.”

“One night.”

“One night.”

“I was drunk.”

“Was he?”

“Yes.”

“Did somebody force you?”

“No.”

“Then stop hiding behind alcohol.”

Claire lowered her eyes.

Marcus’s hands started shaking.

“You came home from Austin.”

“Yes.”

“We got married.”

“Yes.”

“Three months later you told me you were pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

“No.”

Marcus stared.

Claire shook her head desperately.

“I knew there was a possibility.”

“That is knowing.”

“I thought Ethan was yours.”

“Why?”

“Because of timing.”

“What timing?”

“I had been with you too.”

Marcus turned away.

The words felt physically sickening now.

Claire continued:

“The doctor gave us a range.”

“I convinced myself.”

“You convinced yourself.”

“I wanted it to be true.”

Marcus turned back.

“So you never tested.”

“No.”

“You never told me.”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“He didn’t know.”

Marcus stared.

“He slept with his brother’s fiancée and didn’t wonder?”

“He thought I took emergency contraception.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

More details.

Every detail made it worse.

He pressed both hands against his face.

For several seconds he could not speak.

Then:

“When did you test?”

“Eight months ago.”

“Why?”

Claire hesitated.

Marcus lowered his hands.

“Why?”

“Ethan had the fainting episode.”

Marcus remembered.

Soccer practice.

Ethan collapsed for less than thirty seconds.

Doctors initially thought dehydration.

Then a pediatric cardiologist noticed an irregularity.

Genetic testing followed.

Marcus submitted blood.

Claire too.

The results showed a mild inherited arrhythmia risk.

They were told further evaluation might be useful.

Then nothing.

At least Marcus thought nothing.

Claire whispered:

“The extended panel showed something else.”

“What?”
