Ethan nodded.
“Egg and sperm.”
Claire flushed.
Marcus loved public school suddenly.
“Yes.”
Dr. Patel continued:
“Marcus is the dad who has raised you.”
“But we learned the sperm that helped make you came from Daniel.”
Ethan stared.
The room became silent.
Then:
“Uncle Daniel?”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Does that mean you’re not my dad?”
Marcus had prepared answers.
Perfect sentences.
Therapeutic wording.
All disappeared.
He leaned forward.
“No.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“No?”
“No.”
“I am your dad.”
“But Daniel?”
“Daniel is biologically connected to you.”
“What does biologically mean?”
“It means some parts of your body came from him.”
“My nose?”
Marcus swallowed.
“Maybe.”
Ethan touched his nose.
Then looked toward Claire.
“Did you know?”
Claire cried.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Dr. Patel intervened gently.
“Mom knew before Dad did.”
Ethan looked toward her.
“Why didn’t you tell him?”
Claire’s face broke.
“I was scared.”
“Of Dad?”
“No.”
“Of losing our family.”
Ethan looked at Marcus.
“Are we losing our family?”
Marcus moved closer.
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
The structure might change.
Marriage might end.
Daniel might enter.
But Ethan needed one truth.
“You are not losing your family.”
Ethan cried.
Marcus opened his arms.
The boy crossed the space.
Marcus held him.
Over Ethan’s shoulder, he saw Claire crying too.
Ethan whispered:
“Can I still call you Dad?”
Marcus nearly broke.
“You would have to work very hard to make me answer to anything else.”
Ethan laughed through tears.
“Marcus?”
“I’d ignore you.”
“Mr. Bennett?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Old man?”
Marcus pulled back.
“That gets you grounded.”
Ethan smiled.
Then looked toward Claire.
“Do I call Daniel Dad?”
Dr. Patel answered:
“You do not have to call anybody anything you’re not ready to call them.”
Ethan looked relieved.
“Can I still call him Uncle Daniel?”
“Yes.”
Marcus said.
Claire nodded.
Dr. Patel added:
“For now, absolutely.”
Afterward, Ethan asked to see Daniel.
Marcus’s entire body resisted.
Dr. Patel noticed.
“What are you feeling?”
Marcus hated therapy questions.
“Like saying no.”
“Why?”
“Because he betrayed me.”
“Is that Ethan’s reason?”
Marcus stared.
No.
He knew.
“No.”
Dr. Patel nodded.
“That does not mean you say yes immediately.”
“It means you separate your reason from his need.”
Marcus went home angry at everyone, including the therapist.
Then he thought for two days.
The first meeting happened in a park.
Marcus attended.
Claire too.
Dr. Patel nearby.
Daniel arrived carrying nothing.
No gifts.
That had been required.
Ethan saw him.
Stopped.
Daniel looked terrified.
That was the first time Marcus had ever seen his younger brother afraid of a child.
Ethan walked over.
“Hi.”
