The traffic stop.
The temporary license.
The questions.
The paper tearing.
The hand striking the roof.
The kick.
The military identification.
The dashcam.
The tow truck.
Hannah Price.
Captain Whitaker.
And the moment dispatch confirmed the license was valid.
Isaiah listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he stared at the table.
Then he asked one question.
"Did Malloy call Cedar Valley Recovery?"
Naomi nodded.
"Yes."
Isaiah closed his eyes.
She watched him.
"Dad?"
He opened them slowly.
"That's the company that took Leonard's car."
"I know."
Isaiah stood.
He walked toward a wooden cabinet beside the dining room.
Opened the bottom drawer.
And removed a thick cardboard folder.
He placed it on the table in front of Naomi.
Its label read:
LEONARD PRICE — VEHICLE SEIZURE AND COMPLAINT RECORDS.
Isaiah sat down.
"I think it's time you looked at this."
Naomi opened the folder.
Inside were hundreds of pages.
Copies of towing bills.
Letters.
Photographs.
Medical appointment notices.
Court documents.
Handwritten notes.
And a small black notebook.
She picked it up.
On the first page, Leonard Price had written a sentence in careful block letters.
They keep saying the paperwork explains everything. Then somebody needs to explain the paperwork.
Naomi stared at the words.
Then she looked at her father.
"Where did he get these records?"
Isaiah leaned back.
"He kept everything."
"All of this?"
"Everything they gave him. Everything they refused to explain. Every telephone call he could remember."
Naomi opened the notebook.
The first several entries concerned the traffic stop.
Then the towing charges.
Then storage fees.
But as she continued turning pages, she noticed something unusual.
Leonard had begun collecting the experiences of other drivers.
Not only Black veterans.
