She looked toward me.
"Ms. Johnson?"
"Yes."
"This appears to be your assigned seat."
I nodded.
"That's what I've been saying."
Elena retrieved a handheld device and checked the reservation.
For several seconds, she studied the screen.
Then she looked up.
"Yes. Seat 2A belongs to Amara Johnson."
I felt a brief wave of relief.
Surely that would settle everything.
But Victoria folded her arms.
"So anybody can sit up here now?"
The silence that followed was immediate.
Elena looked at her.
"I'm sorry, ma'am?"
Victoria gestured toward me.
"Look at her."
I sat perfectly still.
Gerald closed his eyes.
"Victoria, enough."
She turned toward him.
"Oh, don't start."
The flight attendant's voice became firmer.
"Ms. Johnson is a ticketed First-Class passenger. There is no seating error."
Victoria stared at me.
Then she looked toward the back of the aircraft.
"Well, perhaps someone should reconsider how upgrades are assigned."
I wanted to tell her the ticket hadn't been a random upgrade.
I wanted to explain the reservation, the seat assignment, and the fact that my mother had paid for the trip.
But another thought stopped me.
Why should I?
The airline had verified my seat.
I had done nothing wrong.
I didn't owe a stranger my family's financial information simply because she disliked how I looked.
So I remained quiet.
That seemed to anger Victoria even more.
A woman sitting across the aisle in the next row had begun watching the exchange carefully.
She was in her early fifties, with short brown hair, glasses, and a practical gray coat folded over her lap. A small notebook rested beside her phone.
I would later learn that her name was Evelyn Brooks.
She was a high-school administrator traveling to Atlanta for a professional conference.
At that moment, she was simply another passenger who had witnessed the entire confrontation.
When Victoria continued arguing with Elena, Evelyn spoke.
"The flight attendant already confirmed the seat."
Victoria turned sharply.
"Nobody asked you."
Evelyn looked at her.
"You're making a scene."
Victoria gave a short laugh.
"How charming. Now everyone has an opinion."
Gerald leaned toward his wife.
"Please sit down and leave her alone."
