"What happens to the report?"
"The original is preserved as part of the investigation. The record has been marked as disputed and unsupported, and we're making sure it isn't used as a basis for adverse decisions about your travel."
I nodded.
"Can I have that in writing?"
"Yes."
My mother was sitting nearby, but she didn't interrupt.
Denise continued.
"We've also identified communications between the staff member who entered the report and a passenger involved in the incident."
I went still.
"What kind of communications?"
She hesitated.
"I can't share all the details yet."
I looked toward my mother.
Then I asked, "Was Victoria Whitmore involved before she approached me on the aircraft?"
Denise was quiet for a moment.
Then she answered.
"We have evidence that concerns about your presence in First Class were raised with gate personnel before the flight departed."
My heart began pounding.
I remembered Victoria standing near the podium.
The gesture toward me.
The expression on Caroline Pike's face.
Then Denise added something that made my stomach turn.
"The report was entered after your boarding pass was accepted, but before you reached your assigned seat."
I stared at the wall.
The timing was even more significant than I'd understood on the aircraft.
Somebody had described me as confrontational before I had spoken to the flight attendant about my seat.
Before Victoria had approached me.
Before anyone in the cabin had witnessed a dispute.
I took a slow breath.
"Why?"
Denise didn't answer immediately.
Then she said, "That's one of the questions we're investigating."
I looked down at my hands.
For the first time since the incident, I felt more anger than fear.
Not because I wanted revenge.
But because I understood how close I'd come to having an invented accusation treated as a fact.
And I wanted to know who had decided that was acceptable.
When we returned to Washington, the video had already begun circulating online.
Evelyn hadn't posted it.
She had kept her promise and provided the original footage directly to the airline's investigators. But another passenger had recorded part of the confrontation from farther back in the cabin and uploaded a short clip before the flight departed.
