"Did the gate agent write this?"
The flight attendant nodded.
"It appears so."
My mother studied the ticket.
"Please make sure this reservation is preserved exactly as it was issued."
Elena nodded.
My mother turned toward me.
"Have you changed anything about your booking?"
I shook my head.
"No."
She looked toward the boarding pass again.
There was something in her expression I didn't understand.
Then Elena's handheld device made a sharp notification sound.
The flight attendant looked down.
Her face changed.
She glanced toward the front of the aircraft.
"Excuse me. I need to speak with the captain."
The captain emerged from the cockpit several minutes later.
He was a middle-aged man with silver hair, a neatly pressed uniform, and the composed expression of someone accustomed to making decisions under pressure. He introduced himself as Captain Thomas Reed and asked Elena to explain what had occurred.
She spoke quietly but clearly.
He listened.
Then he looked toward Victoria.
"Ma'am, I need you to remain seated while our ground team reviews this incident."
Victoria looked outraged.
"You're seriously taking this girl's word over mine?"
The captain glanced toward Evelyn.
"I understand there's a recording."
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes."
He asked whether she would be willing to provide it to the airline's investigation team.
"Absolutely."
The captain looked toward me.
"Ms. Johnson, are you comfortable remaining here while we resolve this?"
I hesitated.
My mother stood beside me.
I was still trying to understand how an ordinary flight had turned into something so frightening.
But I didn't want to surrender the seat simply to escape the situation.
"Yes," I said.
He nodded.
"Thank you."
Then he turned toward Victoria.
"Ms. Whitmore, based on what has been reported, we're asking our ground supervisors to come aboard."
She gave a sharp laugh.
"This is ridiculous. I have an important meeting in Atlanta."
The captain remained calm.
"We're dealing with a passenger safety issue."
Gerald finally spoke.
"Captain, I think my wife should cooperate."
Victoria turned toward him.
"Gerald!"
He looked at her.
His voice was quiet.
"Enough."
For a moment, I saw something painful in his expression.
He looked embarrassed.
