His wife looked around.

“This the place?”

He pointed vaguely.

“Somewhere there.”

“You don’t remember?”

“I remember.”

She looked at him.

“You want to find exact spot?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He smiled.

“Need coffee.”

They found a cafe.

While waiting, a young airport officer walked past.

Black woman.

Maybe twenty-eight.

She stopped.

Looked at him.

He wondered whether she recognized.

She did.

“Master Chief?”

“Retired.”

She smiled.

“I was at training.”

He thought.

“First class?”

“Second year.”

“You asked me about cameras.”

His eyes widened.

“That was you.”

“Yes.”

She looked different.

More confident.

Sergeant stripes now.

His wife noticed.

The officer said:

“I wanted to tell you something.”

He waited.

“We had a new recruit last month.”

“He stopped a federal employee because badge photo didn’t match beard.”

The retired Master Chief almost laughed.

“Again?”

She smiled.

“Not like before.”

“The recruit called verification.”

“Credential valid.”

“He apologized.”

“Whole thing took three minutes.”

The retired sailor nodded.

“That’s how it should work.”

She continued:

“The employee was annoyed.”

“Still.”

“As he’s allowed.”

“Yes.”

The officer smiled.

“Just thought you’d like to know.”

He did.

More than he expected.

After she left, his wife handed him coffee.

“You’re smiling.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

He took the cup.

“It worked.”

“What?”

“Something.”

She looked toward the departing sergeant.

“Of course.”

“That’s why you did it.”

The retired Master Chief shook his head.

“No.”

“Why then?”

“Because it was right.”

She smiled.

“You’re exhausting.”

“So I’m told.”

They boarded their flight.

No one interrupted.

No radios.

No crowd.

Nothing memorable happened.
