Then at the first lines.

Something flickered in his face.

He did not understand enough.

Or did not want to.

He tossed the documents onto the nearest counter.

“You don’t give orders here.”

The sailor watched the papers slide.

One fell to the floor.

The crowd had grown.

Maybe thirty people now.

Some pretending they were not watching.

Most filming.

Then the radios spoke.

Not one.

All of them.

The officer’s shoulder microphone crackled first.

A burst of static.

Then a dispatcher’s voice, louder than normal.

“Attention all airport units. Priority command traffic.”

A security employee ten feet away reached automatically for his radio.

The unit on his belt crackled with the identical message.

Across the concourse, another officer stopped mid-stride as her shoulder speaker came alive.

The gate counter radio activated.

Then a handheld unit farther away.

The same dispatcher.

“All units, stand down from contact with Navy Command Master Chief in Concourse B.”

The officer holding the sailor’s arm froze.

The dispatcher continued.

“Repeat, stand down immediately.”

“Joint federal inspection team is approaching.”

The officer released his grip.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

The Command Master Chief looked down at his sleeve where the officer’s fingers had wrinkled the fabric.

He smoothed it.

The terminal had gone strangely quiet despite hundreds of people still moving through it.

The radio spoke again.

“Do not detain.”

“Do not relocate.”

“Airport command is responding.”

The officer’s face drained.

He looked at the sailor.

Then at the uniform.

Then at the ID still in his hand.

The Command Master Chief held out his palm.

This time the officer returned it.

No argument.

The sailor inspected the card before placing it back inside his pocket.

The officer swallowed.

“Sir, there’s been a misunderstanding.”

The Command Master Chief looked at him.

“No.”

The officer blinked.

The sailor continued.

“A misunderstanding happens when two people receive incomplete information.”

“You had information.”

“You decided not to verify it.”

The officer glanced toward the cameras.

“Sir, I was responding to a suspicious-person report.”

“Who reported me?”

The officer hesitated.

“Terminal staff.”

“Which staff member?”

“I’d have to check.”

The Command Master Chief nodded.

“Then check.”

The officer looked toward the far end of the concourse.

The crowd parted.

Four people were approaching.

The first wore the uniform of a senior Navy officer.

Beside her walked the airport police chief.

Behind them came two people in dark business attire with federal credentials clipped at their waists.

The officer standing beside the Command Master Chief visibly stiffened.

The Navy Captain reached them first.

She looked at the sailor’s wrinkled sleeve.

Then at the officer.

Then at the papers scattered beside the counter.

Her face became completely unreadable.

“Master Chief.”

“Captain.”

“You all right?”

“Yes, ma’am.”
