That was the outcome he preferred.

Years passed.

His granddaughter grew.

At sixteen, she found the old airport video online.

She had seen clips before.

Never watched full.

She came into his study holding a tablet.

“Granddad.”

He knew the tone.

“What?”

“This guy put hands on you.”

“Yes.”

“You never told me it was like this.”

“I did.”

“You said airport incident.”

“That is incident.”

She stared.

“You could’ve dropped him.”

The retired Master Chief laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“Every teenager’s solution.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She replayed the shove.

Her face tightened.

“He kicked your suitcase.”

“Yes.”

“Did anything break?”

“Toiletry bottle.”

She looked offended.

“That’s not funny.”

“It leaked shampoo.”

“Tragic.”

She almost smiled.

Then:

“Were you scared?”

The question surprised him.

He considered lying.

“No.”

Then corrected.

“A little.”

Her expression changed.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Of him?”

“Not exactly.”

“Of what?”

“Of what happens when authority decides facts do not matter.”

She sat.

He continued.

“I knew who I was.”

“I knew people were coming.”

“I knew cameras existed.”

“Other people don’t always know help is coming.”

She looked down.

“That’s depressing.”

“Yes.”

“Then what do you do?”

“Build systems where help doesn’t depend on luck.”

She looked at him.

“That sounds like homework.”

“It is.”

She rolled eyes.

Then asked:

“Do you still have the uniform?”

“Yes.”

“Can I see?”

He took her upstairs.

The dress blues hung inside a garment bag.

He unzipped.

The ribbons remained.

Insignia.

Senior enlisted markings.

The uniform looked smaller somehow.

Because no person inside.

His granddaughter touched one sleeve carefully.

“Is this the one?”

“Yes.”

“The costume?”

He looked at her.

She grinned.
