“I know.”
“What income did it produce?”
“None directly.”
“Emily.”
“Wait.”
She led him to the barn.
On a shelf sat glass jars.
Dozens.
Each labeled with dates and locations.
Howard frowned.
“What is this?”
“Rain.”
“That looks like mud.”
“Exactly.”
She held two jars from the same storm.
One dark brown.
One much clearer.
“Same rainfall.”
“Different collection points.”
Howard examined them.
“Tree row?”
Emily pointed at the clearer jar.
“Yes.”
Howard looked again.
“Interesting.”
“Not income.”
“No.”
“But proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“That I’m slowing soil loss.”
Howard set the jars down.
“The bank cannot repossess erosion.”
Emily stared.
He sighed.
“That sounded worse than intended.”
“Yes.”
Howard leaned against the shelf.
“I can extend the deadline.”
“How long?”
“Months.”
“Why?”
“Because you still produced something.”
Emily looked at him.
“What?”
“A plan.”
It was not salvation.
It was time.
Emily took it.
Winter passed.
Some saplings survived beautifully.
Others died.
Spring brought replacement work.
Then drought.
April rain missed them.
May remained dry.
June brought heat.
At first nobody panicked.
Farmers talked about rain the way farmers always did.
Next week.
Storm forming west.
Forty percent chance.
Then thirty.
Then nothing.
By July, corn curled.
Grass browned.
Creek levels dropped.
Dust followed trucks down gravel roads.
Ray began feeding hay earlier than usual.
Walter sold part of his herd.
Emily walked tree rows at sunrise.
The saplings struggled.
Leaves smaller.
Edges curled.
But beneath them something was different.
She knelt.
Scraped surface soil.
Dry.
Two inches.
Still dry.
Three.
Cooler.
Four.
Dark.
She pressed it.
The soil held together.
Emily crossed to an exposed section.
Same depth.
Powder.
She sat back.
For several seconds she simply stared.
Then she ran toward the barn.
Grabbed notebook.
Measured.
Repeated.
Different rows.
Different locations.
Same pattern.
Not everywhere.
Not magically.
Enough.
Ground beneath protected rows retained moisture longer.
Shade helped.
Residue helped.
Roots created channels.
Reduced crusting.
Emily called Thomas.
He came the next morning.
She showed him.
He dug.
Then crossed the field.
