Just a question.
Why?
The judge would think about that for years.
Because he understood questions.
His entire profession was questions.
What does the law say?
What facts are reliable?
What authority exists?
What process applies?
What remedy is proportionate?
He had spent thirty years watching people confuse questioning with hostility.
Judges did it too.
Lawyers.
Police.
Parents.
Executives.
Anyone with authority could become allergic to why.
The next morning, his left cheek still showed faint redness.
His wife noticed immediately.
She was a Black American cardiologist and had watched the clip online despite promising him she would not.
She stood in their kitchen with folded arms.
“You went to work.”
“Yes.”
“After being assaulted.”
“Yes.”
“You are impossible.”
“I had a hearing.”
“You have colleagues.”
“I had prepared.”
She stared.
He poured coffee.
She continued.
“The entire country saw you get slapped.”
“Apparently.”
“You said ‘apparently’ like you weren’t there.”
He smiled faintly.
“I was.”
His wife sat.
Then her anger changed into concern.
“Were you scared?”
He looked at her.
“No.”
She stared.
He corrected.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“I was surprised.”
“Then angry.”
“Then very aware of the gun on her belt.”
His wife’s face tightened.
He continued.
“She had just done something irrational.”
“That changes the calculation.”
“So you were scared.”
“I was careful.”
“That is judge language.”
He smiled.
“Probably.”
She reached across the table.
Touched his wrist.
“Don’t make yourself sound above it.”
He looked down.
“I’m not.”
“Good.”
She released him.
“Because you looked scared for about two seconds.”
He had not noticed.
The live camera had.
The frame circulated.
His face immediately after the slap.
Eyes wide.
Mouth slightly open.
People interpreted it as shock.
Some as humiliation.
Some as restraint.
His wife recognized fear.
That bothered him.
Not because he disliked appearing afraid.
Because he had not known she could still read him more accurately than he could read himself.
The investigation began immediately.
