The camera operator zoomed slightly.
The reporter’s producer whispered in her ear:
“Do not cut.”
The officer shoved.
The man stepped backward one pace.
His briefcase swung.
He regained balance.
The officer smiled again.
“There.”
“That wasn’t hard.”
He looked at her.
“You slapped me.”
“You were refusing instructions.”
“You shoved me.”
“You’re still refusing instructions.”
He breathed once through his nose.
The reporter later said that was the moment his expression changed.
Not into anger.
Into something colder.
More structured.
As if he had stopped experiencing the encounter personally and begun cataloging it.
“What is your name and badge number?”
The officer laughed.
“You’re serious?”
“Yes.”
She pointed to the badge.
“You can read.”
The man looked.
He repeated the number aloud.
Then her name.
The camera microphone captured both.
The officer’s smile vanished.
“You recording me?”
“No.”
He glanced toward the television camera.
“They are.”
That irritated her even more.
“You people always think a camera means you’re in charge.”
“What people?”
The officer hesitated.
The reporter noticed.
So did the producer.
So did everyone watching.
The officer corrected herself.
“Lawyers.”
The Black man tilted his head.
“You keep calling me a lawyer.”
“Because you sound like one.”
“Interesting.”
She stepped closer again.
“Move behind the barricade.”
He looked around.
“There is no barricade.”
The officer turned toward the patrol car.
Then toward him.
“Behind the vehicle.”
“That places me in traffic.”
“Sidewalk.”
“You are blocking the sidewalk entrance.”
“Are you trying to be difficult?”
“No.”
He lifted the briefcase slightly.
“I am trying to enter the courthouse.”
The officer laughed.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“You can’t.”
“Why?”
“Restricted access.”
“The public entrance is twenty yards away.”
“Exactly.”
“So I am walking toward it.”
“No.”
He looked toward the courthouse.
Tall stone steps.
Massive columns.
Bronze doors.
Federal seal above the entry.
Several staff members visible near the security checkpoint.
Nothing indicated the building was closed.
The officer said:
“Use another entrance.”
