“Partly.”

“What kind of business?”

“Food logistics.”

She looked surprised.

“That's interesting.”

“Sometimes.”

He smiled.

“Most people think it's boring until something goes wrong.”

The woman laughed.

“That's true of many important jobs.”

They spoke for several minutes about travel, education, and the challenges of helping students believe they could build better futures.

The CEO listened more than he spoke.

He had always enjoyed conversations with teachers.

His own high school science instructor had encouraged him to apply for scholarships he believed were beyond his reach.

Without that encouragement, he might never have attended university.

Before the aircraft reached cruising altitude, the senior flight attendant approached the elderly passenger.

Her smile was radiant.

“Good evening, ma'am. Can I help make your flight more comfortable?”

The older woman thanked her and requested hot tea.

“Of course. Anything else?”

“No, thank you.”

The attendant adjusted the woman's blanket and promised to return.

Then she turned toward the Black passenger.

Her expression changed almost imperceptibly.

“Sir.”

He looked up.

“Good evening.”

She glanced at his clothing.

Then at the tote bag.

“Are you in the correct seat?”

He blinked.

“Yes.”

“May I see your boarding pass?”

“Certainly.”

He retrieved the digital pass from his phone.

She examined it.

Seat 2A.

Royal Laurel Class.

The information was correct.

Still, she looked skeptical.

“Did you receive an upgrade?”

“No.”

“You purchased this seat?”

“Yes.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Then she handed back the phone.

“Fine.”

She began walking away.

The CEO looked after her.

He had experienced similar encounters before.

People sometimes assumed that his clothing did not match his financial circumstances.

Other times, they appeared surprised to see a young Black man seated among older executives in premium cabins.

He generally preferred not to react.

He knew that visible outrage could become a distraction from the underlying behavior.

But he noticed.

He always noticed.

Several minutes later, the senior attendant returned with tea for the elderly passenger.

She spent nearly two minutes discussing the woman's travel plans.

Then she passed the CEO without acknowledging the empty water glass beside his seat.

He waited.

There was no urgency.

Cabin service involved many passengers and complicated procedures.

He continued reading.

After another twenty minutes, a younger flight attendant approached.

“May I offer you a drink?”

The CEO smiled.

“Ginger ale, please.”

“Of course.”

She returned with the beverage and a small packet of snacks.

He thanked her.

As she placed the glass on his table, the senior attendant appeared behind her.

“I'll take this section.”

The junior woman hesitated.

“But I was just—”

“I said I'll take it.”
