The police officer looked up.

“Sir is correct. Ma’am, don’t discuss statements.”

Linda sat.

For the first time that night.

Sarah looked toward Daniel.

He remained near the doorway.

Her wedding ring still sat on his plate.

He had not touched it.

Michael followed Sarah’s gaze.

Then he saw the ring.

His expression changed again.

“Sarah?”

She shook her head.

“Later.”

He nodded.

No lecture.

No “I warned you.”

No demand.

That was one thing Sarah loved about him.

Michael had disliked the Harrington family for years but had never asked Sarah to leave Daniel.

He had made mistakes.

She was beginning to suspect enormous mistakes.

But that was not one of them.

The officer took statements.

Melissa finally admitted she saw Linda grab Sarah first.

Peter said he had been looking down.

Diane said she saw the slap but not the beginning.

Melissa’s husband said he “didn't want to get involved.”

The officer replied:

“You already are.”

Sarah almost smiled.

Then Emma said quietly:

“Grandma held Mommy and Mommy said let go.”

Everyone looked at her.

The officer softened.

“We’re not going to question your daughter tonight.”

Sarah nodded.

“Thank you.”

Linda was not arrested immediately.

The officers explained that because the alleged assault had occurred inside a residence with conflicting family statements and no ongoing threat once parties were separated, they would complete the report and consult supervisors regarding next steps.

Michael did not interfere.

He did not mention lawyers.

Did not mention influence.

Did not demand handcuffs.

Sarah noticed that too.

Linda noticed and seemed emboldened.

“You see?”

she said once police stepped into foyer.

“This entire performance is unnecessary.”

Michael looked at her.

“You still think this is about the slap.”

Linda’s expression changed.

Daniel spoke.

“Michael.”

Sarah turned.

“What is going on?”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

Michael looked at him.

“I gave you six months.”

Sarah stared.

“Six months for what?”

Daniel said nothing.

“Daniel?”

Michael answered.

“To tell you the truth.”

Sarah’s stomach tightened.

“What truth?”

Michael looked toward Linda.

Then toward police.

“Not here.”

Sarah laughed bitterly.

“Apparently ‘here’ belongs to you.”

Silence.

Michael’s face showed regret.

“Yes.”

Sarah stared.

“What does that mean?”

He removed his coat.

Not because he was staying.

Because his hands needed something to do.

“Seven years ago, Linda and Richard were going to lose this house.”

Linda’s chin rose.

“We were restructuring.”

Michael ignored her.

“Richard’s business had failed. There were tax liens. The mortgage was months behind. The bank had scheduled foreclosure.”

Sarah looked at Daniel.

He stared at floor.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

The answer barely came.

Sarah felt dizzy.

Michael continued.

“Daniel came to me.”

Sarah looked sharply at her husband.

“He asked you for money?”

Daniel said, “I asked for help.”
