“That’s weird.”

Teenagers have a gift for clarity.

Claire laughed nervously.

“Yes.”

“It was.”

Nora looked at her mother.

“What did you do?”

Claire did not lie.

“I was unfaithful.”

Nora’s face changed.

She understood enough.

“Oh.”

Silence.

Then:

“Was it before me?”

Claire and I exchanged another look.

“Yes.”

Claire said softly.

Nora stared.

Something connected.

“Wait.”

She looked between us.

I raised one hand.

“You do not need every detail.”

“I absolutely need every detail.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

“No.”

Claire smiled through discomfort.

“Some things belong to a marriage.”

Nora crossed her arms.

“Gross.”

“Exactly.”

She sat.

After a minute she asked:

“Was I why you stayed?”

That question hit harder than anything else.

I immediately answered:

“No.”

Claire looked at me.

Nora frowned.

“But if it happened before me—”

“You were why we remained connected,” I said.

“You were not why I chose the marriage again.”

“That choice came later.”

Claire added:

“And that matters.”

“Because children should never feel responsible for holding adults together.”

Nora looked thoughtful.

Then asked:

“So you could’ve divorced and still loved me?”

“Yes.”

“Completely.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

Then:

“Mom, that was really messed up.”

Claire swallowed.

“Yes.”

“It was.”

Nora looked toward me.

“And you lied too?”

I blinked.

“What?”

“You said you were perfect?”

“I never said that.”

Claire laughed.

I stared at her.

“Do not enjoy this.”

Nora smiled.

The conversation lasted almost an hour.

Painful.

Necessary.

After she went upstairs, Claire sat beside me.

“You answered fast.”

“What?”

“That she wasn’t why you stayed.”

“Because she wasn’t.”

“I know.”

Claire looked toward the staircase.

“I spent years afraid she was.”

I took her hand.

“She brought us into each other’s lives permanently.”

“She did not rebuild the marriage.”

“We did.”

Claire leaned against me.

That distinction had saved us.

When I was sixty-one, Dr. Levin retired.
