“Where are you going?”

“I don’t know.”

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re proving nothing by storming out.”

I picked up my keys.

“I’m not trying to prove anything.”

“Then stay.”

“No.”

She stepped toward me.

“So that’s it?”

“You cheat once and twelve years mean nothing?”

I stopped.

Turned.

“That sentence is incredible.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

“Explain it.”

Claire shook her head.

“You’re emotional.”

“Yes.”

“I’m very emotional.”

“So maybe don’t make permanent decisions today.”

I stared at her.

“You just demanded one.”

That silenced her.

I opened the front door.

Claire said, “There are things you don’t understand.”

I looked back.

“Then you should have explained them before giving me an ultimatum.”

I left.

That evening I checked into a small business hotel fifteen minutes away.

It was clean.

Quiet.

Anonymous.

I sat on the bed with my duffel bag still zipped beside me.

At 8:43, Claire sent:

You are making this much worse than it needs to be.

At 8:58:

Please come home.

At 9:26:

You can be angry without throwing away our whole marriage.

At 10:07:

There are things about this you don’t understand.

I stared at that final message for a long time.

Then turned off the phone.

I barely slept.

Every time I drifted off, my mind returned to one image.

The pregnancy test.

Not Claire with another man.

Not yet.

My brain seemed unable to picture him because I did not know who he was.

Instead it pictured the test.

Two lines.

My wedding ring beside it.

At 6:15 the next morning, I remembered the insurance file.

Then the mortgage documents.

Then the tax records my accountant had requested earlier that week.

All still at the house.

I waited until I knew Claire would be at work.

Then drove back.

Her car was gone.

I entered through the garage.

The house felt different immediately.

Nothing had changed.

That was the strange part.

Coffee mug in sink.

Throw blanket on sofa.

Shoes by the stairs.

Family photographs.

The house had not been informed the marriage was in crisis.

I went to the small office downstairs.

Opened the filing cabinet.

Insurance first.

Tax folder.

Mortgage packet.

I had nearly finished when the bottom drawer jammed.

I pulled harder.

Nothing.

I crouched.

Something appeared wedged behind it.

I removed the drawer.

A white envelope was taped to the back panel.

My stomach tightened before I even read it.

Across the front, in Claire’s handwriting:

DO NOT OPEN UNLESS ETHAN LEAVES.

Six words.
