Now someone else was building a commercial plan around it without his consent.

He shook his head.

"I don't understand how Linda thinks this ends."

Rachel considered the question.

"She may believe enough pressure will make you agree."

Devon frowned.

"Then she doesn't know me."

The attorney paused.

"That may be true. But don't underestimate the importance of keeping the situation calm and well documented."

Devon nodded.

He'd already preserved the correspondence, security videos, and maintenance records.

He didn't intend to abandon the process.

But he also didn't intend to let the conflict consume every part of his life.

That evening, he invited his sister and her children for dinner.

They ate inside rather than swimming.

The pool remained closed pending the follow-up equipment inspection.

When the youngest child asked why they couldn't go in, Devon explained that he wanted a professional to confirm everything was safe.

The little girl frowned.

"Did the pool break?"

He smiled gently.

"Not exactly. We're just making sure it's okay before anybody swims."

She nodded.

Then returned to her dinner.

For a moment, Devon wished adults could accept clear boundaries as easily as children sometimes did.

Miguel completed another inspection the following week.

He confirmed that the pool could be maintained through its regular servicing procedures and documented the relevant conditions.

But he recommended continued monitoring of the equipment enclosure because of the unauthorized Clearwater visit.

Devon asked whether the earlier interference could have damaged anything.

Miguel explained that the available inspection hadn't identified a specific dangerous alteration, but the lack of authorization remained concerning.

He didn't speculate about what the Clearwater employees intended.

He could only report what he observed.

Devon appreciated the distinction.

He'd spent his career working with mechanical systems.

He knew the difference between a verified defect and a theory.

The technician also asked whether Devon had experienced any additional trespassing.

Devon shook his head.

"Not since the last event."

Miguel nodded.

"Good."

Then he glanced toward the garden gate.

"Keep the access controlled, and call us if anything changes."

Devon agreed.

The pool was eventually returned to normal use after the appropriate checks.

For a few weeks, peace seemed possible again.

He swam in the evenings.

His sister's children visited once with their parents.

And he began believing that the financial review might finally persuade Linda to stop.

Then the threatening messages began.

The first appeared in his mailbox.

It was a plain white envelope without a return address.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

You can't stop progress forever.

Devon stared.

The message wasn't signed.

It didn't directly threaten physical harm.
