He advised that the matter be addressed promptly with the appropriate authorities.

Sandra also sent Devon's attorney the relevant information through a secure process.

And for the first time, she began to fear that someone might actually be injured.

Devon received Rachel's call late Thursday afternoon.

He was sitting in his home office reviewing a maintenance proposal for a hospital project when his phone rang.

Rachel's voice was unusually serious.

"I need you to listen carefully."

He set down his pen.

"What happened?"

She explained that a concerning draft report had been found.

It described a future electrical hazard at his swimming pool.

Devon felt his stomach tighten.

"A future hazard?"

"That's part of the concern."

He stared toward the backyard.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Then asked whether the report identified a specific defect.

Rachel explained that the description wasn't supported by a completed inspection record.

The issue was being referred for appropriate review.

She advised Devon to keep the pool closed to visitors while any safety concerns were assessed and to avoid confronting Linda or her vendors.

Devon nodded.

"Of course."

He contacted Miguel and arranged for another professional inspection.

He also verified that his emergency contacts and security system were functioning.

Then he called his sister.

He told her the children shouldn't come swimming that weekend.

She sounded alarmed.

"Is something wrong with the pool?"

"I don't know of a confirmed defect. But somebody's made a very concerning claim, and I'm not taking chances."

She immediately agreed.

Then asked whether he was safe.

Devon hesitated.

For the first time, he wasn't sure how to answer.

Finally, he said, "I'm being careful."

His sister was quiet.

Then asked whether he wanted her to come over.

He smiled sadly.

"No. Stay with the kids. I'll call you."

After ending the conversation, he stood beside the sliding doors.

The swimming pool reflected the evening sky.

He'd purchased the house because he wanted peace.

Now he was worried that someone else's obsession might transform the most relaxing part of his home into a dangerous place.

Friday brought another confrontation.

Linda appeared at his front door carrying an HOA folder.

Devon saw her through the security camera before answering.

He opened the door but remained inside.

"What do you want, Linda?"

She smiled tightly.

"We need to discuss the pool."

"Please direct association matters through my attorney."

Her smile disappeared.

"You can't hide behind lawyers forever."

Devon looked at her.

"I'm not hiding."

She stepped closer.

"You're forcing the HOA into a difficult position."

He shook his head.
