He answered.
"Hey, sweetheart."
Her voice brightened.
"Dad!"
He smiled despite himself.
"How's Grandma?"
"She's making pancakes."
He laughed.
"Of course she is."
His daughter hesitated.
Then asked.
"Did those ladies come back?"
The engineer went still.
For a moment, he considered offering a comforting lie.
But his daughter had already seen enough to know something was wrong.
He answered gently.
"Yes."
She became quiet.
Then whispered.
"Did they use Mommy's pool?"
His chest tightened.
He looked toward the camera footage.
The blonde woman was standing on the very tiles his wife had selected.
He swallowed.
"Yes, sweetheart."
For several seconds, his daughter said nothing.
Then her voice broke.
"Why?"
The engineer closed his eyes.
He had asked himself the same question.
Then answered.
"I don't know yet."
A pause.
"But I'm going to find out."
The engineer's mother arrived the following afternoon.
She was sixty-eight years old, Black American, with short silver-gray curls, warm brown eyes, and the quiet authority of a woman who had spent most of her adult life teaching children.
Before retirement, she worked as a school principal.
She had managed difficult parents, frightened students, angry staff members, and school budgets that never seemed large enough to cover everything children needed.
Very little intimidated her.
But when her son showed her the pool recordings, she became completely silent.
She watched the blonde president enter the gate.
Watched the women settle beside the water.
Watched the strangers use the loungers.
Then heard one guest describe the pool as an HOA private retreat.
The older woman's expression hardened.
She watched the rest of the video.
When it ended, she looked toward her son.
"They're charging people to use your house?"
He nodded slowly.
"That's what it appears."
His mother stared.
Then looked toward the backyard.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Finally, she spoke.
