A place where a little girl felt safe.

Then his wife became ill.

The illness progressed more quickly than anyone expected.

There were appointments.

Hospital stays.

Periods of improvement.

Then setbacks.

The engineer reduced his work schedule.

Relatives helped with school transportation.

His wife tried to remain involved in their daughter's routines for as long as possible.

One evening, several months before she died, the three of them sat beside the pool.

The water was still.

The air was warm.

Their daughter had fallen asleep on a lounge chair beneath a towel.

His wife looked toward the small blue mosaic star.

Then turned toward him.

"Promise me something."

He smiled sadly.

"You always start serious conversations that way."

She laughed softly.

"Because you keep listening."

He took her hand.

"All right."

She looked toward the sleeping child.

"Keep teaching her to swim."

His expression changed.

"Of course."

"And don't let this place become sad."

He swallowed.

She continued.

"I know you're going to miss me."

His eyes filled.

She squeezed his hand.

"But I want you two to laugh out here."

For a long time, he could not answer.

Then he nodded.

"I promise."

His wife looked toward the pool.

The little blue star was visible beneath the surface.

She smiled.

"And don't let anybody tell her that our home isn't hers."

He looked toward her.

"Nobody will."

At the time, he believed that would be the easiest promise in the world to keep.

He did not know that, four years later, the HOA president would stand beside the same mosaic star and insist the pool belonged to the neighborhood.

After his wife died, the pool remained closed for almost six months.

Not because the equipment failed.

The filtration system continued running.

The water stayed clean.

The engineer maintained the chemistry, checked the pump, and tested the safety equipment with the same care he brought to his professional work.
