Instead, when they arrived at the reception desk, the manager told them there was a problem with their reservation.
Joseph presented the confirmation.
The employee examined it.
Then asked for the payment card.
He provided the same card used to make the booking.
The manager frowned.
She said the payment method required additional verification.
Joseph remained patient.
He offered to contact the bank.
The manager declined.
Then she told him the room was no longer available.
Evelyn looked confused.
“But we have a confirmation.”
The manager answered coldly.
“Reservations are subject to verification.”
Joseph tried to explain.
He had paid the deposit.
He had the receipt.
And he'd arranged the trip months earlier.
The manager became irritated.
She asked him to step aside.
When he continued requesting an explanation, security approached.
Evelyn became frightened.
Her husband wasn't shouting.
He wasn't threatening anyone.
He was simply trying to understand why the hotel had taken his money and then refused the room.
Joseph felt humiliated.
For the first time in years, he lost his composure.
He raised his voice.
“Ma'am, I have been saving for this trip. I have the confirmation right here.”
The manager looked toward security.
“Sir, you're disturbing other guests.”
Evelyn touched Joseph's arm.
“It's all right.”
But it wasn't.
He looked toward her.
The lavender dress.
The pearl necklace.
And the excitement slowly disappearing from her face.
Then he stopped arguing.
They collected their bags.
Walked out beneath the enormous entrance canopy.
And stood on the sidewalk while Joseph tried to find another hotel.
The city was crowded.
Several nearby properties were fully booked.
Their replacement room cost more than they expected and was far smaller than the suite they'd reserved.
By the time they arrived, it was nearly midnight.
Evelyn sat on the edge of the bed.
She removed her pearl necklace.
Then looked toward her husband.
“Joseph.”
He turned.
Her voice was gentle.
“You didn't do anything wrong.”
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then he sat beside her.
“I promised you.”
She took his hand.
“You kept your promise. We came back.”
He shook his head.
“Not the way I wanted.”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
Then reached into his jacket pocket.
She found the old photograph.
Joseph stared.
“How did you know?”
She laughed through tears.
“After fifty years, you think I don't know when you're hiding something?”
He smiled.
She unfolded the photograph.
Two young people standing outside the Halcyon Grand in 1976.
Joseph wearing a brown suit.
Evelyn in a white dress.
