Both laughing beneath the hotel's illuminated sign.

She looked at the image.

Then toward her husband.

For a moment, her eyes filled.

“Look at us.”

Joseph nodded.

“We were young.”

She smiled.

“And broke.”

He laughed softly.

Then whispered.

“We're not doing much better tonight.”

Evelyn leaned against him.

“Yes, we are.”

He looked toward her.

She continued.

“We're still here.”

For several minutes, they sat quietly.

Then Joseph began crying.

Not because he couldn't afford the presidential suite.

Because he'd spent fifty years trying to give his wife one beautiful evening, and strangers had made him feel ashamed for asking them to honor a reservation.

When Elias called Joseph Carter, the retired teacher initially assumed the hotel wanted to settle the disputed cancellation fee.

He answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

“Mr. Carter, my name is Elias Ward. I'm calling on behalf of the new ownership group of Crown Meridian Hospitality.”

Joseph frowned.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then asked.

“Is this about the hotel?”

“Yes.”

The older man sighed.

“I've already spoken with three people. They keep saying somebody will review it.”

Elias felt his throat tighten.

“I understand.”

Joseph continued.

“I don't want trouble. I just want the charges corrected.”

Elias nodded.

“We're reviewing the charges, and I believe there are additional concerns about how your reservation was handled.”

For a moment, the line was quiet.

Then Joseph spoke.

“Did somebody finally look at our confirmation?”

Elias closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The older man swallowed.

For several seconds, he didn't answer.

Then whispered.

“We had everything they asked for.”

“I know.”

“Our bank said there was nothing wrong with the card.”

Elias nodded.

“The records we've reviewed don't establish that the card was invalid.”

Joseph became quiet.

Then asked.

“Why did they make us leave?”

Elias looked toward the investigation file.

He couldn't yet answer completely.

The room had been reassigned through the external booking program.

The payment-review exception appeared unsupported.

And the hotel's handling of the Carters raised serious questions.

But the investigation was ongoing.

He took a breath.

“That's one of the things we're trying to establish.”

Joseph sighed.

For a moment, he seemed disappointed.

Then Elias continued.

“Mr. Carter, I want you to know that your reservation was not treated the way it should have been. Your wife and you deserved a fair and respectful explanation.”

The older man's voice trembled.

“Thank you.”

Elias looked down.

“Would you be willing to speak with an independent investigator about what happened?”
