“The new controlling ownership structure is effective, and the transition board appointments are being implemented. You officially control the company that owns the Halcyon Grand Manhattan and the rest of the Crown Meridian hotel portfolio.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the attorney added something that made the silence feel enormous.
“I understand you're already at the Manhattan flagship. Is the unannounced property visit going well?”
Elias looked directly at Vanessa.
Her face had lost all its color.
He answered calmly.
“It's been educational.”
Renee paused.
“Is there a problem?”
Elias glanced toward the matte-black card.
Then toward the security guards.
“Yes,” he said. “I believe we've discovered one.”
Vanessa swallowed.
Her lips parted.
For a moment, she seemed unable to breathe.
Then she looked toward Isaac Fulton.
The security guard was staring at Elias's phone.
The second guard slowly lowered his hands.
Behind the reception counter, a young employee covered her mouth.
The wealthy guests surrounding the lobby had stopped talking completely.
Elias ended the call.
He picked up his card.
Then slipped it carefully into his pocket.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Sir…”
He looked at her.
For the first time, she seemed to notice how controlled his expression had remained throughout the confrontation.
How little he'd raised his voice.
And how he had never attempted to use his status until she made it impossible to conduct an ordinary check-in.
“Mr. Ward,” she whispered, “I didn't realize…”
Elias waited.
She swallowed.
“I didn't know who you were.”
The billionaire nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
For one brief instant, relief crossed her face.
Then he continued.
“But you knew I was a guest standing peacefully at your reception desk.”
Her expression collapsed.
He looked toward the gold name badge.
Then asked quietly.
“Would you repeat what you said about people who belong in this hotel?”
Vanessa stared.
Her mouth opened.
No words came.
The lobby remained silent.
And Elias Ward, the man she'd accused of carrying a fake credit card, was about to discover that her behavior was only the smallest visible part of a much larger problem.
Twenty-six hours earlier, Elias hadn't planned to visit the Halcyon Grand.
He was sitting in his office overlooking the Hudson River, reviewing the final acquisition documents for a transaction that had consumed almost eighteen months of his life.
