Statements.

Photos.

The hidden room.

The lock.

Messages from my mother.

That was when the first clean piece of evidence appeared.

Vanessa’s phone.

My mother had texted at 2:41 that afternoon.

Keep him where he is. Conrad will arrive at 11:00. Do not improvise again.

At 2:44:

Lily should be dressed before six. I do not want questions at the gala.

At 2:51:

And Vanessa, remember what happens if Darius learns before I’ve corrected Michael’s damage.

Agent Lena Foster read them twice.

“Who is Conrad?”

I answered.

“Conrad Vale.”

She looked at her partner.

That name meant something to them.

I noticed.

“What?”

“We’ll discuss later.”

Michael was taken through the rear service drive to a hospital under another name.

Not because he was immediately placed in witness protection.

Life is not television.

Because he had been confined in a hidden room, had untreated injuries, weight loss, and needed documented medical care.

Lily went to Dana’s house with Dana’s husband.

She screamed when we told her she could not stay with Michael.

“He promised!”

“He’ll see you.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

She looked at Vanessa.

“You said we protect him.”

My daughter’s words cut through every adult lie in that house.

Vanessa crouched.

“We do.”

“Then why are they taking him?”

“To help him.”

Lily looked unconvinced.

So did I.

At 7:20, Agent Foster asked Vanessa whether she was still expected at the gala.

“Yes.”

“Would your mother-in-law notice if you didn’t go?”

“Immediately.”

“Would she know Darius returned?”

“She shouldn’t.”

I said:

“She may have location services.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“I disabled family sharing.”

“When?”

“After Michael arrived.”

Another secret.

Agent Foster said:

“We are not asking you to confront her.”

Good.

I wanted to anyway.

“We would prefer you not alter routine until we assess immediate risk.”

Dana objected.

“She is a coercion victim and potential defendant depending what comes out.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Defendant.

The word landed.

I looked at her.

She looked back.

Neither of us spoke.

Agent Foster said:

“No one here is making charging decisions tonight.”

“Good.”

Dana’s voice was steel.

“Then choose language carefully.”

The gala began at seven thirty at my mother’s estate.

Vanessa was supposed to leave at six thirty.

At six twelve my mother called.

Her name appeared on Vanessa’s screen.

Every person in the room stopped.

Agent Foster said:

“Answer normally.”

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

She answered.

“Hi, Evelyn.”

My mother’s voice came through speaker.

“Why aren’t you on the road?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“The sitter was late.”

“What sitter?”

“New agency.”

“You said Lily was coming.”

Vanessa recovered.

“She’s tired.”

A pause.

Too long.

“Is everything all right?”

“Yes.”

My mother sounded calm.

“Has Michael eaten?”

My stomach dropped.

Agent Foster’s eyes sharpened.

Vanessa answered:

“Yes.”

“Good.”
